Cinci Part 2: Catie, Choco Rocks & Michelle's Wedding!

Meanwhile, in
CINCINNATI ....

"dren & cegg" | a classic
Meet Catie: I'm sure you've already met her before, but just in case... meet Catie. I love this girl because she is one of the most candid, hilarious people I think I've ever met. I love to laugh, but hangin' with this lady will put me in tears. Or peeing my pants, depending on the severity of our laughing bouts. It's totally true, and I'm fine to admit that. Haha.
where it all started.. that blasted clearchannel job....
Anyway, Catie and I took an afternoon stroll downtown; she took me over to The Banks, a new development that has replaced the previously useless plot of dirt situated between the two stadiums. It's beautiful! There's a park, a string of restaurants, some shops, and even a Christian Moerlein brewery/taphouse. Oh, and if you didn't notice, there were plent of randomly-strewn Kiss107 signs, everywhere. That's significant only because that's where I met Catie in the first place, a debachle of a job that only those who've survived escape will ever truly understand. Trust me, that much is unanimous. Haha.

froyo @ orange leaf!
They've got an Orange Leaf downtown now, too! I'm a huge fan of froyo, and so is Cegg, so we made a stop off to test out the pumpkin spice froyo [REC-O-MMEND!!!]. At the self-serve toppings line, we were faced with a pit of choco rocks. Neither of us knew what they were, so naturally one lone little rock made its way into my yogurt to hang out with the cherries, almonds and boba. FACT: I'm not a fan of choco rocks. Just sayin'.

blues blues blues | michelle's wedding reception!
The culminating reason I came over here in the first place this weekend was to see Michelle get married! The time was finally heeeeere :). Joe and I trekked over to a beautiful Catholic church in Cincinnati to be witness to Michelle and Mark tying the knot, then on to The Newport Syndicate in the heart of Newport, KY for an absolutely GORGEOUS reception. We had to leave a few minutes early, but it was a dazzling affair, complete with a live band, delicious food, and a table full of ex-Clearchannel employees with whom I was able to re-connect. Hilarious.

me with the drop-dead-gorgeous bride, my amazing friend, michelle
I'm so excited we were able to be a part of Michelle & Mark's beautiful day. I can't wait to see honeymoon pictures!

Tomorrow = church at New Harmony, lunch & a maternity [photo]shoot with the Prescotts, and then the solo drive back to IL. *Yawn.

G'Nite!

Back In The 'Nati : DAY ONE :)

QUESTION: Would I bleed for a friend?
ANSWER: YES!
congratulations, eric & becky!
Here's the scoop on that one: I got a mass LinkedIn email from an old colleague of mine back in Cincinnati requesting the presence of all friends and family at a blood drive. Well, not just any blood drive; this particular friend, Eric, is part of the marketing team for Hoxworth Blood Centers in Cinci, and is slated to get married[!!!!!] not this, but next weekend. [[CON-GRAT-ULATIONSSSSS!!!!!!!]] They got creative and arranged a blood drive challenge in honor of their wedding, and as it so happened, I was both eligible and available to donate today, so that.. is.. what I did. Congrats, again to my friend Eric and his bride-to-be! xo!

******************
QUESTION: Who suggested lunch at Ban Thai today?
ANSWER: Ladd :).

ladd.
I've known this kid for ages now, and while that is sometimes both a bad and a good thing [usually dependent upon the day and/or topic of conversation, lol], he is a friend for whom I am deeply grateful on many levels. It was a great day to catch up; Becky and I stopped for lunch in Eastgate, and the three of us chowed down on some thai food before heading out our separate ways. I truly do revel  in catching up with old friends, and sometimes there are none better than the best.

******************

QUESTION: How on EARTH did I fail to get a picture of Becky [and not the above-mentioned Becky - just to clarify] & me?! My favorite [and only] college RA, with whom I'm still very close, hung out for a larger part of today and I didn't get one single stinkin' picture of us - HOW DOES THAT HAPPEN?!
ANSWER: Oh, that's right, because we were too consumed with squealing and rummaging like wild coyotes through the new REI in Rookwood.

hello, new rei!
Becky and I decided to take a jaunt out to Rookwood [neighboring the old stomping grounds of Norwood, aka NorHOOD, aka the Village of the Fantastic Fifteen-or-so of us that ran that place like the playground it was...hah]. The brand new REI is among a handful of business that have ventured into regions I used to call home, after I left there. Naturally. Haha. There's now a Jungle Jim's over in Eastgate, too, and that both excites and infuriates me for that very reason. Haha. So anyway, I witnessed my dear friend Becky audibly squeal in a way that made her resemble the girly-girl that she so clearly is NOT, for just a split second or so. She cracks me up. We spent plenty of time browsing, even trying on some potential wish-list items, but left empty-handed. Oh well. Probably better that way, for the sake of my closet. Anyway, it was amazing, and mark my words, I'll be back.
******************

QUESTION: What's the best way to combine watching one friend's band play while celebrating another's going-away?
ANSWER: Silverton Cafe. Duh. (:

brother bear!
[good luck, nader, on your next adventures...
... in jordan ... with grueter! we'll miss you!!]
Nader is packing his bags and heading to Jordan [as in, the country] to work alongside our other friend Jamie. Hard to believe, but super-cool opportunity, and even cooler that I was able to see him on his last weekend in the states for a while. Nader & Jamie comprise half of what we affectionately coined as The Twigs [Jamie, Nader, Matt, & Nalom], so it is with some sadness that I watch them disband and pursue this whole life thing. Love those fellers.
singin' the niiiiiiight away...
[ladd & keith]
Keith's band was slated to play tonight at Silverton Cafe, so I agreed to rendezvous with Nader, Matt, Melissa, Keith, Laura and some others for an evening of unwinding and celebrating some next steps and some downright fun music. I opted out of Midpoint tonight, but perhaps I'll head that-a-way at some juncture tomorrow. We'll see.

Major, major thanks to my amazing mother-in-law for keeping Syd for the day - it is so good to be home to see you, too. We've MISSED you, Mamaw.... ♥

[Backdated entry]. Oh, dear Cincinnati.
It's still home.

O-H-I-O!! O-H-I-O!!!!

true. story.
GUESS WHAT?!
Syd and I were on the road by mid-evening, en route back to good old OHIO. I.. am.. SO excited for this weekend, I can't even tell you. She was just as ready as I was, and all smiles at that! We were off to see Mamaw, and a bunch of our friends!

best road trip buddy, ever
Fast forward 5 hours later, to now, when we're settling into the hotel. It's gonna be a jam-packed weekend, and I cannot wait :)

WE'RE HERE!!!!!!!! :D

See you tomorrow.......

Daily Gratitudes

I've been pledging to myself the last few weeks to attain and maintain a higher level of overall positivity. While this is absolutely relevent to my personal life, as well, as it pertains to what I'm sharing now, this is specific to my life at work.

My job is rooted in the interaction with other people. If there was simply ONE word to describe what I do - not my job title, but rather my actual job - it would be the word people. People of just about every calibur cross my desk or my phone line in the course of just a single day, for a list of reasons I wouldn't even want to begin detailing. There are moments that drive me to what I often think to be the end of my wit, but more frequently there are floods of gratification to be had from the fruit of my labor. Correction, our labor.

I am part of a machine which, at times, has had broken pieces, mis-calibrated gears, and of course, days during which it seems to be completely out of commission all together. Like every good office, the most productive days can only be measured agains the comparative scale of menial and tedious crap through which we march day in and day out in search of success. Without divulging unecessary detail, I'll simply say that most recently, the overall functionality of my work-life has taken some dramatic leaps both down, up, down, and back up, and I'm proud to be part of what seems to be a stretch of improvement.

Again, even in the realm of  internal functioning, people have just about 98% of the determining power as to whether or not any collective endeavor will be effective in its originally intended form. [That other 2%? I'm convinced it's failed technology.] Well, as it so happens, I work with a group of people, with whom I've seen good, bad, ugly, and everything in between. I will consider them my work family, simply because we do in fact spend a third of the hours in a work-day week hanging out in the same office. That's more than enough time to experience the way a person is wired and how they can contribute to an overall effort.

ALL of that being said, we allotted a portion of today to Office Training, with Wendy- a gal who used to work on the corporate side of my company, conducting training for all the newbs [such as myself, a few years back] and consulting for the franchise owners and developers. She's pretty awesome. Her passion now is consulting, and that's probably what landed her in our hands for an hour today.

Kids, I'm a skeptical person, slightly by nature but more subliminally by experience. When it comes to anything formatted as a "formal group exercise," I'm unfortunately that person that needs to be sold on it within the first few points in order to absorb its content. Well, I already like Wendy from previous encounters, so I had no doubt walking into this that it would be worth it.

Good call, Cori! :)
Wendy wasted no time digging right in - deep, but with a goal no more zealous than to identify the exact fundamentals that drive our process. I was pleasantly surprised. I'll spare the more involved details, but I eventually wanted to share this with the world, because I'm sold.... that it's beneficial.

"daily gratitudes"
May I introduce: Daily Gratitudes.
Nothin' like starting from scratch.
The assignment is this: Moving forward, each day, take 5 minutes before and after the day passes to answer those questions, and see if it doesn't start to make a difference. Sure, it's kiiiind of "woo woo" things, as Wendy coins them, meaning they're a little cheesy in both theory and presentation, but that's not to void their effectiveness. I get it, it's a little elementary, but past face value [I took my first go at it this afternoon] it's actually kind of neat. My brain functions consciously on the most recent information to pass through it, so keeping a running and constantly-revised draft of this at the forefront of my brain has been helpful.

Example 2:
Identify any given group of people, issues, or functions in your day-to-day routine, and then list, in no particular order, any and all one-word descriptions that would encompass that person, issue, or function. For instance, we used, "associates," referring to the group of people who are either current or prospective employees of ours. There was a vast, vast range of adjectives in that regard, and rightfully so, on both spectrums. Once we'd poured out enough honesty to hold us for a while, we were instructed to review the list and cross off all the derogatory descriptors. After that, make a committment to refrain from using any/all negatives, while simultaneously focusing on only building from the positives. Reality check.

Like I said, totally basic, totally applicable, and above all, totally doable theories.
I didn't realize how much I would appreciate Wendy's visit today, but as it looks right now, I think I'll be consulting that consultant on a frequent basis.

And... I'm encouraged. I needed an extra little pick-me-up, and that was it. Thanks, Wendy :).

Welp, Mo was here earlier and will be back again after TeamKid; I suppose I'd better get to packing for the weekend before she gets back... one more day at work before it's O-H... I-O! bound!

I. Can't. Wait.

Simple Words For Livin' & A Classic

TRUTH.
I felt it specifically appropriate to add this in for today.
This is something with which I constantly fail, even in my greatest efforts. That's both the beauty and curse of being human, blessed with God's endearing grace and mercy; I will fail at this, but God never fails at anything. I was prompted to go seeking some encouragement in scripture form to post up at my desk after some happenings at work this morning; this is what I found, and it is now printed and hung directly in my immediate line of sight. I am confident this will serve as a daily reminder to me that I am a witness, daily, to the people that come in and go out of my office. I don't know the first thing about their lives outside this office past what we discuss while they're here, and I've found too often that the nature of my job fools me at times into falling into a colder frame of functioning than I intended.

Simply put, it's easy to become callous in my job, if I'm not careful. Guilty.

I don't know if you've noticed lately the tagline at the top of my blog, but I am in fact a kid on a journey, in a world that is not my home. I'm a guest here, and while I am, I need to be a light, not a burnt out bulb.

Just a little thought niblet for the day. I needed it, so maybe you did too. If not, pass it on :)

Oh, and it's a-stormin' down here in St. Clair County, so naturally, everything electric is on the fritz. We managed to still watch The Voice [in and out due to the storm]. In between reception times and afterwards, we opted for one of my favorite classics: Annie! -- And yes, the 1982 version. By the end of it, Sydni was singing along and dancing in the living room. Love love love.

P.S. - I also love checking out the "then-and-now" galleries for stars of those types of films. Check it out :)

aileen quinn ... aka - annie!
[all grown up ;) ]

I happen to be one of those people who loves storms [in moderation, of course]; It's time to call it an early night to go and lull away to the rain... *yawn.

Happy Tuesday :)

Flowers, Pea Pods & Serenades

It wouldn't be a Monday if it weren't eventful.

1 | FLOWERS! My husband.. has once again outdone himself [even if it did catch me some grief at work, but that's another story]. Thank you, Joe, for the antique roses. They are beautiful. And they smell terrific :).

antiqued roses? it's like having little bengal striped roses. they rock.
2 | Peas in a pod! This is part of the fun of being half of a mama-daughter duo: whenever I make a jewelry piece, I'm expected to make a dwarfed version of the same thing for the mini.

-- Exhibit A:
peas in a pod necklace + earrings
-- Exhibit B:

mini peas in a pod bracelet, in purple... of course ;)
3 | The Voice. Awesome, as usual.

How much do I love life?
Lots :) I hope you do, too.

Alex Babot Day

There is something to be said about the power of good friends and the impact they can have on us.
There is something even more to be said about the power of fellowship among believers; we, on so many different levels, are capable of reaching so much deeper into each others' lives than just the surface, and have that relationship echo back to us.

That being said [I know, something of an epic intro for what is actually pretty silly], today was orchestrated to be Alex Babot Day among a few of the guys at the Tower. For those of you who don't know Alex, his better half is Lara, and they are the first couple with which we really bonded when we first got to Towerview. I love them to pieces, and wish we had more opportunity to see them outside of church [ah, life]. Anyway, one of Alex's signature trademarks is his affinity with, and absolute ability to successfully sport the bowtie. I'm telling you, it might seem like a dated form of neckwear, but this guy can pull it off.

Erego, Alex Babot Day. :)

joe. pastor ron. adam. jarod.
ta-da! [this wasn't even all of them]
{missing at least jason, jimmy, kyle, and of course, alex! :( .. }
And if you think the fun stopped at the grown boys.....

cutest thing, ever. haha.. little luke!
^ I was actually on nursery rotation this week with Mo & Tanya; Tanya put Kyle's tie on Luke to see how it would look... and might I just say, he was dashing! He looked like a little sub-contractor; Tanya even managed to snag a shot of him making some important business calls. [We don't mean to interrupt, Mr. Luke! ;) ].

Now, because my husband is a married man, he is part of the larger collective group of married men who so often are found with one or both of their feet squarely planted in their own mouths. [I say that lovingly.. lol] In this case, a comment was made that Joe should buy lunch for every participant of Alex Babot day if Alex did not show up to bear witness. Welp, Alex did not make it this morning, so I'm not really sure if or when that's going to actually happen, because today was consumed with last-minute errands before Joe headed out to Cinci tonight. Haha. Good. Work. Joe. :p

Anyway, just a few more days before the next weekend, during which we'll all be in Cinci. I'm chompin' at the bits to get home.. good grief. I can't wait :) :) :)

Almost Monday!

Coconut Pancakes? SOLD.

magic. it's a magic pancake.
If you're asking what that is, it's a pineapple/coconut pancake from The Egg & I in O'Fallon. If you're wondering how much of it I ate: well, I'd love to exaggerate and tell you to just imagine that plate sans pancake, but that sucker was intimidating. I only finished about 3/4 of that thing. Next time, I will either eat faster so as to fool my stomach [and likely pay for that later], or order half of it in a to-go box up front.

Either way, YUM?!
I've never been to this place, even after almost two years of living here. -- Which, btw, almost 2 years? Has time really escaped me so? *Sigh. Rabbit trail...

Fortunately for us, but unfortunately for the purpose of blogging, the rest of our day was consumed with plain old Dills family time. It was great for us, but again, not exhilirating as it goes for an itemized account of the day. I will say that we did find Sydni a Halloween costume. If you've not seen it yet [that's most of you], sorry, but there shall be no spoiling. You'll see that soon enough.

Happy Saturday, lovebugs. Go hang out with your loved ones!

Fellowship Fiesta

Switchin' it up! [Primarily because I was off 30 minutes earlier than I usually am and my house is already set up for small group.. planning ahead - BOOYAH]

Today was awesome because...

It's Friday! I don't work tomorrow, my husband is actually in the state of Illinois for small group this week, and I've got a handful of my favorite people coming over in about an hour :)

done.. and done.

I'd stay and chat, but uhhh.. we're about to grub and dig into some Bible study.
Bring on the enchiladas, salsa, and fellowship.

¡Olé!

NO Transformers In The House! ;)

Ya see that?  That, my dear blogbots, is nothing more than a simple chai latte from Bread Co, but it was delivered by one of our clients. He toted in three little lattes and three little bagels for three gals who didn't realize how delicious they both would be this morning. How thoughtful, right? [Thanks, Warren!]

So I can't complain about how the morning started once we got going; M&D are out this week at Summit, so we're left again to our own devices. The day passed by without too much fuss and that was that. I made a pitstop at St. Clair Sq. at yet another attempt to nail down a dress option for Michelle's wedding next weekend. Update on that? SUCCESS. As Nancy would've said, "Cha cha CHAAAA...."

At home, I found Mo already there, with Jimmy following about 15 minutes later, and lastly, Joe. Since he's slated to do some travelling for work that does not warrant flight time, he rented a car for the journey.

Well.. let me re-phrase that.

He rented a Transformer. I'm pretty sure Bumblebee is in my garage. It's pretty wicked cool, the ONLY exception being that this is in fact real life, Cori, and the autobots don't really exist.

Well boo hiss. [It still looks like a Transformer. Hmph!]

Anyway, we thought it would be fun to take it for a spin out to dinner; as funny as it was, the short jaunt to Texas Roadhouse was quite the episode as it was the four of us plus Syd in her carseat.

*Note: This car is not really meant to have backseat passengers. Haha.

Oh well. We're back here now, at home; the boys are downstairs disassembling the tent - pardon me, the castle, and Mo and I are about to zonk out to some CSI. I love our dear friends. That's a good Thursday, yeah?

I think so :)

A Is For ATHLETES

I spent the majority of my evening tackling some dirty laundry and doing some minor repairs to a few pieces of jewelry I've been neglecting for way too long. As my audio-visual soundtrack, I opted for some coverage of the Crossfit games, then the women's national team [soccer] match-up against Australia.

This reminds me how dastardly stagnant I've been in my workout efforts. It's been a few weeks, literally, since I've been over to Gold's, a lackadaisical string for which I really have no good excuse other than the easily-refutable one involving work and parenting... and all that.

I used some much-needed inspiration from The Voice over the last two weeks to dig some into my vocal side, and after tonight, I'm reminded that I need to start being a little more intentional about sanctioning off some fit time.

Consider it done.

crossfit | marcus hendren
lol.. went with this one bc i'm from ohio and that's
how we do it.. in the country... in ohio.
First of all, it's a terribly small world sometimes. Haha. As I was watching the Crossfit games, there was one little bio segment on Marcus Hendren that I nearly overlooked until I thought I recognized some of the background from his "home life" clips. I dismissed that too, until he said he was from Johnstown, OH. [Aw! Mini shouts to Jen & Laney, my two obviously favorite natives of J-Town... ♥]. My cousin Jeremy coaches at a CF in PA, and I know a few other people who've adopted the CF lifestyle. [No, I don't know Marcus Hendren] Pretty random, either way.

And pretty BEAST, too. I wouldn't cut it for 10 minutes on the circuits they run. Not anymore anyway.
I don't think I like that feeling.
Hrm. [Food for thought].

Anyway, once Crossfit was done, it was on to the US v. Aussie game.

remember them?? oh man.. i'm getting old. :(
I've been impressed so far with the womens' post-Olympic victory tour, but tonight was the last game for coach Pia Sundhage. It makes me feel old realizing that I've even just watched her coach for the last several years. I still remember when Mia Hamm finally hung her boots up and I remember when Brianna Scurry left. I remember watching Abby Wambach play years ago, and after watching her snag a couple more goals tonight, I'm fairly certain I'll make sure Sydni has clips of her legacy to watch one day too. That doesn't even count Hope Solo & Alex Morgan. *Sigh.

solo. morgan. wambach
a true definition of women empowered. :)
The US bounced back from a 2-1 trail to win it 6-2 over the Aussies. By far a great game to watch. I think I could live vicariously through the womens' national team for a very long time. That would be fine, right? ;)

It's midweek already - hard to believe.
Oh, and I'm in the midst of dress shopping for Friesy's wedding. Talk about first world stressers. Haha.

It's a good week so far. I hope yours is going well, too!
[Anyone wanna go for a little jog? No? Ok, well first thing tomorrow then.]

Things Of A Random Husband

First off, I got home this evening to find this in my mailbox:

towerfest??! what's that?! ;)

The only reason that's funny is because these fliers [on behalf of Towerview Baptist Church] were intended for distribution during local neighborhood canvassing, and were designed to attract the local community...

... by me.
Haha. I found out that Mr. John had done some rounds earlier today, and clearly didn't realize this was our house. I admit I reacted like I'd never seen it; I opened up the mailbox and got really excited, too, because I hadn't yet seen this thing on print - only on the computer. Ladies and gentlement, hang on to that thing; it took four drafts to look that way ;) haha.

presenting: princess monster sydni!

ANYWAY,

It's no secret that I'm a little bit out there when it comes to having a spirit of random spontenaeity; naturally I should have married someone of a like-minded nature. Well, folks, I did. Joe whisked Sydni off tonight after dinner to the store, and came back with a couple things:

1. When we asked her if we could call her Princess Sydni, her response was, "No. I am Princessss MONSTER." *Sigh. I suppose we should start exercising a tactic to delineate between a real name and a real status. I joke, I joke.

Either way, she was absolutely stinkin' adorable, and wore this thing around all night until I finally coerced her into PJ's based solely on the idea that if she slept in her dress, she would get it "aaaaaall wrinkly... and we don't want wrinkles, do we?" [a totally convinced Sydni: "nooooo, no wrink-a-lees"] Ah, the power of parental persuasion ;).

I said a couple of things, didn't I.
princess and her castle

Well.. as I sat upstairs wrapping up a few last-minute craft things I seem to never finish, Sydni, in her Rapunzel dress, bolted into the living room and demanded I go see her 'Rapunzel castle' in the basement. Of course I obliged, expecting to find the futon with some added chairs draped with every spare blanket in the house.

2. Nope. This is what I found instead. Hahaha. Now, let's give the hubs some credit here; for someone who doesn't typically jump at the chance to assemble anything, he's quite skilled at popping a TENT.. in the BASEMENT. Hahaha. I couldn't help but laugh when I saw what is probably a 9-person? tent standing squarely in the middle of the playroom. So very random, but so totally awesome.

No, I did not opt to sleep in it for the night like they will, but once that thing is outside, I'm all game.

... And friends, that is the latest and greatest from the Dills' residence.
See. You. In the mornin' :)

El Voce! [Night 4]

More of The Voice.

I'm gonna start singing eventually, if these auditions keep inspiring me to do so.
I might also buy Christina a shirt.
Really it's all up in the air, still. Haha.

Top picks from tonight:

I think I was drawn particularly to these two tonight because they're both so quirky, in a fun way.

|| EDIT! ||

I totally forgot about this guy...

^Guess how many vocal lessons that kid has had? (Zeee-ro.) Guess how old he is? (Sixteen). That's natural talent, friends :)

There were more, of course, but I have to say these two three were by far the most fun for me :)

It's been a manic monday, for sure.

Happy WEEK!

Towerview "Speed Chat" !

Today was quite the buzz at the Tower!

It led off by Trish asking me early last week if I could both fill in for Carla today in the praise band as well as move my solo up one weekend to today. It wasn't until Friday night that I nailed down exactly which song I wanted to present today, and in a typical string of lateness, I found myself without a run through before go time.

natalie grant | alive (mary magdalene)

I'd like to think it went off about as well as it could have :). I really love Natalie Grant's music, but hitting some of her power notes is iffy for me most days. This one (Alive) was pretty moderate as far as belting lines goes; I might just keep it around for another good day to sing it. Easter, maybe? Hrm.. we'll see.

Back home, I ended up falling asleep [it's been a long week]; Joe took Sydni down to SAFB for the air show to meet up with the Woods & the Cunicos. I'm sorry I missed it, but I did see some funny videos and even heard that mini crawled up on Miss Debbie and passed out. She's silly. And random :)

Nowwww on to the really exciting part!
towerview speed chat!!
It's heeeeeeeere! [& gone by this point, but it was here, and it was amazing!] A few months back, the deacons' and staff wives had gathered together to devise some sort of event purposed to welcome new members that have joined our church recently. We had something like 27 members to welcome, so the idea was proposed to do a "speed chat." Of course based off of the principles of speed dating, this event would follow a similar format, seating new members around tables with the "old" members travelling from table to table asking fun, pre-written questions to get acquainted in a light-hearted way. Fellowship, welcoming arms and a great atmosphere to boot.

new member books!

Oh, and of course, food. [We're Baptists, c'mon.]

It. Went. Off... WITHOUT A HITCH.

Major, major thanks to the deacons' wives for all of the careful planning and execution of this event, and for entrusting me to create the new members' book. I had the best time doing it, and although I'm kinda glad it's done, I'm happy I was able to contribute, and hope that it helps a little with easing that overwhelmed new member feeling that I know I had when we first got here.

Seriously, it was an amazing time.
I knew before people even started arriving that it would be a great thing; I got to the church to set up my camera and help with the table spreads to find the entire crew already buzzing around. I've not seen so many different desserts in one church basement in a long time, all of which [from what I heard and experienced throughout the evening] were incredible.

We had nearly 100 people show up for this. How amazing! We had a blast - well, I know I did - and, might I say, did a pretty good job of clearing some major space on the dessert line ;)

Photog time:

Lyla's Birthday Party!

I said it earlier this week, but I'll say it again:

HAPPY 4th BIRTHDAY, LYLA!

new ride? of course :)
Joe is still out on business, so Sydni and I made our way over to the Thompson digs today for Lyla's birthday cookout. It was everything a 4-year-old's birthday should be, complete with a hand-decorated cake [sidenote: Becky, those princess eyes were to die for! hehe], Dora cupcakes, a mountain of pink and glittery-wrapped presents, and of course, a brand new convertible.

awesome cake[by becky!] + dora cupcakes = kiddie sugar overload ;)
Thanks again, for having us over! We had a blast. Mo even made the suggestion that Lyla, Sydni and Emma should be getting together at some point in the near future to do some drag racing in the church parking lot. Haha. We'll have to see. I think Sydni may have the advantage only because she hasn't figured out the driving in a straight line yet, and with the bigger SUV of the three, she may be more of a bowling ball than anything else. Hah.
happy birthday, lyla!!!
[jarod, we'll all be happy to give you some free pointers on
managing synthetic barbie doll hair ;) lol..]
Anyway, not a bad way to spend the bulk of a Saturday. We followed it up with some errands before heading home to catch us up to now, relaxing and waiting on Joe to get home from his week away.
Oh, and yes, I decided on a song to sing tomorrow. Say a prayer for me, yeah? :)

No, It Really Doesn't Take Much

I ordered a lense hood for my camera what seems like 3 months ago, and it fiiiiinally came in the mail today. I had begun to think it might never make it here, or that it really had been shipped from a warehouse on the moon... as it turns out, I was just a few clicks off.

Thanks, China, for shipping this little buddy over to me. I know, I know, I just fell total prey to the consumer-hunger fangs of Chinese product. Let's face it though, only a fraction of us can honestly say that we don't incorporate foreign goods into our daily routine. Either way, I paid for this sucker in pounds [which seems even stranger now that I realized it came directly from China, but eh...], so I'd like to consider it just me participating in commerce on something of a cultured level.

[No? Okay, well it sounded good.]

Whatev'. It's here, I'm using it, and that is that.

my little chinese lense hood.. lol..
It really doesn't take much to impress me :).
Happy FRIDAY!!!!

iDon't Have An iPhone.

If there's one thing we love as a culture, it's technology. Granted, there are exceptions to that as with anything else, but generically speaking, we are a society consumed with the latest and greatest technological advancements.

Hello, iPhone.
First: if you don't know what an iPhone is, well, walk down any street with more than five people and chances are, at least one of them have one. That, or in light of the fact that you have access to this blog, I'm willing to guess you have access to Google.
Second: if you have an iPhone, well, to each his own. I have zero qualm with Apple or iAnything; it just isn't my thing when it came down to choosing a phone.

However, the Apple empire is pretty impressive, and the progression of the iPhone is a testament to the power of creative ingenuity and strategic marketing ;).

^ Nothing flashy, but it is kind of interesting considering that the movie trailers they used to advertise were Pirates of the Caribbean and Zoolander. Funny. 2007. Doesn't seem that long ago? Hrm...
What gets me the most is not the incessant reliability of an annual release of a better, faster, newer, re-tailored version of this thing. I will also attribute the random and absolutely unnecessary obsession with constant eye contact between a user and their that I witness on a near daily basis to the fact that just about everyone around me has an iPhone.

Today I was a restaurant and saw a girl using an outlet across the room to charge her phone while she was there. I'm totally not judging, it was just funny to watch her cross the room what I would guess had to be at least 24 times to check her Facebook during the time we were both there.

Same scenario a few weeks back, and it was a table full of teenagers sitting silently together at a table glued to their phones. Yeah, I know it's not just an iPhone thing, but it was pretty funny that every one of them had an iPhone. It kind of resembled a test study of some sort, complete with a subject group of teens. It was at least a full five or six minutes before any of them took a breath from phone time to acknowledge the presence of anyone else at the table. I found that sad, but interesting.

I'm not really even sure where I'm going with this one; I think I'm just at the realization that, while everyone around me has an iPhone, I'm still going to stick with the good old Droid ;) I felt like venting. I'm curious but at the same time slightly afraid of what type of technology will be considered a common household name when Sydni is my age. Kinda scary.

*Yawn. It's supposed to rain tonight. That'd be excellent; sleeping is so much better when it's raining :).
[[Almost Friday, wooo!]]

How's THAT For a Midweek?

I think I have a problem...
Seriously.
I'm addicted.

I watched the third night of blind auditions for The Voice tonight, and I've gotta say I'm goin' on night 3 of inspired by some of their stories, their talent, and the fact that they're putting it all on the line for the approval of the industry's megastars.

This one, by far, was my favorite from tonight:

I've always been a fan of the Marley vibe - there's something so relaxing about the emotion behind reggae in general. This kid's got it nailed down, and I'm kind of excited to see how he does in competition.

Then there was this one, by a guy whose family suffered through extreme political turmoil in Nigeria; his father was wrongfully incarcerated, while he and the rest of his family fled the country and made it here to the U.S. It's one of those heart-string stories that makes me stop and appreciate the gravity of the life with which I am blessed [magnified by the whole adoption thing]. His testament that music saved his life is dually-noted [no pun intended].

Suave, yeah?? I like the natural rasp in his voice. Major talent.

Oh..
... and just in case I'd forgotten this is still mainstream media programming, I'll include this one particularly unique gal: You can search her audition on your own if you feel inclined; I'd rather not have it on here... I didn't realize until I went back to watch the others that she ["Domo"] is on crew for Rhythm City [ABDC]. Interesting. Definitely conceited, though. Too bad, too - she's a pretty talented dancer, if nothing else. :/

Well.. all things The Voice aside, I caught some of the opening moments of America's Got Talent before retiring the TV for the night, but I did see this, which I thought was cool [apparently they're in the finals now? Sure.]: David Garibaldi & His CMYK's - I'll let you look that one up on your own too [video.overload]. Pretty amazing stuff!

****
Anywho, today was about as decent as they do come.

Do I dare forget the birthdays for today?
Umm, absolutely NOT! ESPECIALLY since we LOOOVE these two munchkins!

HAPPY 4th BIRTHDAY, LYLA!!!
beautiful lyla!
and of couuuuurse,
HAPPY 4th BIRTHDAY, JACOB!!!
silly candid from the dual bday party we had a few weeks ago : jacob!
We have the privilege of having both of those little ones [along with Landon, the other September birthday kiddo] in our small group every other Friday, so we get a little extra dose of them from time to time, and we love it. Happy birthday to both Lyla & Jacob [& no, in case you thought to ask- they are not related. hehe]

****
And in other news:

Nancy stopped by to see us late this morning - her new job seems to be treating her well and she's enjoying it. I'm so happy for her, but slightly reminded still that we miss her. Well, I miss her. A whoooole lot. *Sigh. So good to see her though!! Miss you, Nanc!! To top off the morning, I gave some blood and such to the life insurance medical examiner. I found out today that my heart's still beating and my arm still bleeds like it should with a needle in it. It's a start. :p.

Sydni and I did some more damage to the weed infestation that keeps threatening to overtake every spare inch of soil in the front and back gardens. I'm almost glad for The Voice airing at the same time every evening for the past 3 days - it's brought us back inside after about an hour of digging and pulling. I don't think it's over-exerting work by any stretch, but the mosquitoes have taken an equal liking to the moderate temperatures and it's made for very itchy evenings. My arms and legs look a little bit like broken brail sentences right now. Oy, bugs. >:[ Grawr.

It's been a jam-packed week so far; I've got some last minute details to do on one of the Towerfest mail-outs, so I suppose I should get back to that before tomorrow. Oh, and I'm slated to sing this Sunday and have yet to solidify a song choice.

Hey procrastination, heeeey

The Self-Titled Day: 9/11.

I remember thistoday, last year - we were in church, attentively glued to the the testimony of a man impacted by the events of September 11, 2001. I wouldn't dare detract one second from the tragedy that made that day the historic pinnacle that it was. I read some articles around this time last year; there was a span of various interviews done with young men and women who were, in 2001, either infants or whose mothers were still pregnant. One or both parents of each of these children were taken during the events of 9/11/01; it was compelling hearing the perspective of young adults who had lost parents so young to that event. THANK YOU.. to the men and women who laid everything on the line on that day to save each other, and to the men and women after that who went to defend the honor of our resilient country. I'm PROUD to be in a nation so proud of its strength and so quick to defend it.

[fbhack!] thought i'd go with this one
[[with his better (& beauutiful)]] other half, his wife ashley :)
In what is at most just a situationally unfortunate coincidence, I also don't want to detract from celebrating things that are worth celebrating. That includes a multitude of things, but today especially, a very good friend of mine from home has a birthday today.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ZACH!

I've known that kid since middle school, and although it's been a loooong time and quite a few memories later, I'm proud of him and proud that we're friends. Hope today is amazing for you, Ferg! You'd better be spending it with that lovely wife of yours. Happy birthday, on a day that's not really celebrated in this light anymore.

Among other things that were awesome today: USA SOCCER!!!! GO USA!!! I thought it exponentially fitting that the US walked away with a win tonight in their first WC qualifying game against Jamaica. They played their first WC qualifier in 2001 just under a month after 9/11, against Jamaica then, too. WAY TO GO, USA!!! I am so proud!!

"priveleged to play on sept 11" [per the us soccer website]
♥ so proud!
Plussssss, today was night 2 of 3 of the opening blind auditions for The Voice. There is some really incredible talent auditioning for this season; I'm going to speculate this one top to bottom. In the spirit of doing something a little different, this kid came and broke out a song completely in Spanish. Definitely different.. that's what I love about this show [yesterday with the yodeler? Yeahh :) ]

And this one: Aquile. One, his name is super-sweet, and his spin on this song is refreshing.

*sigh. This show. Love it.
What a day.
See you tomorrow, blogbots.

Do Re Mi Fa So La Theeee Voiiiice :)

It's back, it's back, it's back!
Season 3 of The Voice! I've so missed my weekly appointments

Soooo... the work day flew by without much of a hitch, which is a little frightening considering it was Monday [eeeeeeerie ...]. I'm not complaining! I made it a point to get Sydni, run our errands, and high tail it home with a due sense of urgency... pardon...

7PM = THE VOICE...

... aaaaaaaand...
... THE BENGALS!
'ello there, awesome Monday.

How did I forget that there are three nights of blind auditions? Who's a happy little hooked-on-power-notes viewer? This guy

Ceelo wore silk pj's.Christina wore a leather jumpsuit smaller than what my kid would wear. Adam donned a plain t-shirt that, in its ironic simplicity, probably cost more than everything combined in my closet, and Blake stayed true to his cowboy swagger [is that an oxymoron? I'm not even sure, really.].

Highlight reel? Okay. Sold.

^Yodeling! She's got a killer voice to boot.. I know I can't yodel. Kudos.

^^ This guy just turned EIGHTEEN. He looks like he's at least 24, and even though I think Christina's a bit over-done these days, I would have to agree with her that I love love loved it. (:

Sounds silly, but this show is pretty encouraging, even if it is a televised thing.

[Oh, and the Bengals lost tonight. Sad me. It's okay though. We'll get it!]
Here we go, week!

Sundays With Sweet People

I'm ashamed to admit that this was my first Sunday back in Sunday School in about 4 weeks. I have no admissible excuse; my only explanation consists of failed attempts to heed the alarm clock, hiccups with coordinating the entire family, and on one occasion, a migraine. I know, I know.... far from valid. I was reminded this morning how much I love my Sunday school class, my church, and especially the people.

Speaking of people, there's a lot going on with any given person or people at the Tower, and today was no exception.

First....
Happy 4th Birthday, Landon!!
We love this kid. The Babots were one of the first families with whom we connected here at Towerview, and we're blessed to have them as friends. We've had a few awesome play dates with Landon, they're in our small group extension, and naturally we see them at all the church functions and outings. Syd even referred to Landon as her "little brother" [although yes, he's older] for a bit until she decided he was better as a friend :). Happy birthday, to our little buddy - Hope it was an excellent day!!

shot from mother's day 2012 | landon!
happy birthday!!
Also,
Happy FORTIETH Anniversary to the Bests!!!
Ironically, by Bests, I mean THE Bests, literally! John & Ellen Best, that is. Ms. Ellen is our nursery director at church, but she's sooo much more than that. She's an amazing person, and John is nothing less than just as awesome. I'm so inspired by their generosity, and by the example they set as a married couple for those of us far less seasoned in the art of being married. This is the kind of example more of us need to follow!
40 years ago today :)
As if it weren't enough that Jimmy brought and sported a stick mustache [originally for the skit, but it worked throughout the entire service this morning], the funny times with our friends carried out over the course of the day, and eventually into the evening, even after choir practice. The Woods invited us to Arby's for some last minute munchies, and we had some fun with Sydni's kiddie meal "toy." It was a cowboy, but totally resembled someone else we know, if that someone had a boxy head and a permanent plastic-esque glow. :p In my defense, I wasn't the first or only one to notice....

cowboy? ... or... joe? haha ;)
Ahhh, I'm such a sucker for fun times with fun people :).

It's about time to call it a day; I'm due for an early start tomorrow.
Oh, and The Voice starts tomorrow. [*squeaaaaaaal!]
Here we go, work week!
