Perfect Day For Perfect North!

Yayyyyy! SNOWBOARD DAY!!!!

she's so essssiteds....
^ Okay, so maybe Stella didn't care much for the ensuing day of snow fun [probably because she wasn't invited... details, details..], but I was ready to go!
ol' girl is up and ready, too!
I met Jessica at her place this morning, and we were off. We swung by to pick up Andrew, and the three of us set course for Perfect North. It's been a long time since I've been out there; it's pretty much just as I remember it - crowded on the weekends but still fun :).
geared up & ready to go!
look at this girl!
The snow was much better than I'd expected for the day, what with there being ZERO snow anywhere but at Perfect North.

The lift though..... questionable. Haha.
selective snow coverage.. :p
It didn't matter.. we had a blast!
woo hoo!
top of the "mountain"
Next time, I'm taking a go-pro. I would love to capture some footage of the PN regulars. There was one string of lift-riders that for whatever reason, all lost it on the dismount. Like... 8 chairs in a row, like bowling pins.

I knock the place, but it's the closest one to us, and it's still fun even when it's packed to the max. Next time maybe we'll shoot north instead and hit Mad River. OR, maybe we'll get really planny-like and head west where the big dogs roll. That sounds better ;)

We're back now and I'm cozied in for a night with my better half. A successful day!

Pre-Birthday Birthday : Yay, Carri!!

Well, her birthday isn't until tomorrow, but that obviously meant we had to celebrate it TODAY!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CARRI!!!
yayyy!!
If you know me, then you know I love birthdays. I love other people's birthdays more than my own, which is weird.
happy birthday, girl!
For lunch, we voted for Carri to take her down to the OTR food staple, Taste of Belgium. If you know anything about me, you know that that is one of my favorite places in this city. If you don't know me, well... you should look into visiting Taste of Belgium the next time you find yourself in Cincinnati [& I think now in Columbus, too??]. It's... amazing.
chicken + waffles = on. point.
Perfect experience, as usual, and made even more fun by the fact that Carri had never been before today. She hasn't explored much of the OTR scene at all; we decided over our three plates of C&W today that for Elisa's birthday, we would do The Eagle, just down the street. We'll see if that holds true, but knowing us and our shared affinity for food, it will ;)

A couple of Carri's friends are in a band: Eclipse The Movement. She invited us all down to the newly-renovated Woodward Theater [YOU GUYS. I don't know if I'm the only one that preferred the center staircase of the old theater, but eh. The renovation is still gorgeous..].
woodward theater | cincinnati, oh
We at first hadn't made any concrete plans to oblige, but ended up deciding it would be the perfect follow-up to dinner at yes.. The Eagle [I'm a fatty.. dontcha dare judge..]. Rob & I wrapped up eating with just enough time to jog through the chilly air to The Woodward and join Carri, Elisa & her roommate and a fun crowd of others to watch a few bands play.

Definitely a fun little outing.. :)
my date.. he's kinda cool ;)
Happy [1 day early] Birthday, Carri!

Thanks again for the invite out tonight, & make it a great day tomorrow!!

2 Thessalonians 3:13

Today was just.. one of those days..

I needed this reminder, just about all day.

EVEN {I sound like Sydni.. haha}.. EEEEVEN.. when all I really want to do is a 180 and march full force in the opposite direction of what's right.

It's not always easy to stay on the right course, folks, but it's possible. I've had my share of detours, that's for sure.

Phew. Never.. EVER.. tire of doing what is right.

Amen.

Evangecubes & Prayers, Continued!

Look at THIS guy who got off work at 2:00 today..
lucky duck!
Sheesh. Lucky, lucky!
I think I'm lucky in my own way here; I finally got my Evangecubes that I ordered!
standard size...
And...
pocket sized!

These are tools that will be used in Panama, and if you have any questions on how they work (or how to get ahold of some for yourself, let me know! Or, just consult Professor Google or Captain Amazon... because that's what I did :)

On the note of Panama, I ask that you continue to pray for me, for my team and for this endeavor. We are in the depths of preparation for this, and while my heart is full throttle, my mind is often human and as such has fleeting reservations about a trip like this. I'm of course not indulging the human tendency of fear, but I am asking for continued prayers for peace, for tenacity and for our presence there in the mountains of Panama to have an impact.
aaaaamen!
Love & Honor to each of you - Happy Wednesday!

Eat .. And PLAY.. Like Champs!

If there's one thing my mother taught me when I was young [that I still wholly embrace today], it's this:

There are many schools of thought that would say I'm completely off-base, but I'm a firm believer that what you put into your body affects not just what comes out of your body, but how you're body functions overall. It's a science, really, but in the same rite, it's not a concept that should be so complicated.

That ancient adage, You Are What You Eat holds more stock to me than the combined amount of advice I've been given along the way. It's simple:

You eat well, you'll be well.
You eat crappy, you'll be crappy.

I know: "Healthy food is expensive." Here's something to consider:
1. That's an excuse not to do our research into cost-efficient ways to eat better.  They DO exist; I know this because I am not oozing money but I manage to maintain a healthy menu. Think about it in terms of what not to buy or eat, instead of I need to GET this, and BUY this. Also, on that note - don't accept at face value anything you're told, unless you're willing to go and test that advice. For instance, a doctor might tell you you're lacking manganese. You could get a supplement for that, or .... you could eat grapes. And green beans. And cucumbers, kiwi, strawberries, rice... the list goes on. Not every fancy-sounding element our body needs will cost you big bucks to satisfy.
2. Yes, sometimes the healthier options are a bit pricier, but often times, they're NOT. Don't believe all the hype about prices. A bag of apples is cheaper than a case of those minibags of chips, and I don't think I really need to lay out the nutritional benefits of apples v. chips.
3. It's all about educating yourself and how much discipline you're willing to have.
4. Don't diet without exercise. It'd be like putting a full tank of gas in your car and then never driving it. You're fueled for performance, but you're sitting in the garage. Take a walk with your kids, if nothing else. Don't use kids as an excuse to never do anything [just sayin'].
5. Make it PERSONAL! Have you ever considered just how unique we each are? We have different hair, different skin, different digestive systems, different pH balances... we are not cookie-cutter creatures? So why use a cookie cutter diet? You might not need to eliminate gluten from your diet. Lactose intolerant? There's calcium in beans, salmon, orange juice and some types of soy, almond & rice milks. Don't think that because you are allergic to, or can't eat something, that you will consequently never be able to get/have what you've been told those things provide. I for one cannot eat red meat [I lack the necessary digestive enzymes, womp womp!], so I find iron, protein and Vitamins B & D elsewhere.
6. Find an accountability partner! [Or 2! Or 5! You get it..] This applies to many areas of life - conquering anything is usually easier - and more fun - if you're not doing it alone. Find someone else to hold accountable, and to do the same for you. You'll both see gains, and you'll both find out what works for you that perhaps didn't work for the other, and likewise.

I could go on.
Nobody certified me to know that stuff. I don't have a degree in any version of nutritional science. I am not a doctor.

BUT,
I've never had cavities. Until four years ago, I had never broken a single bone. I was born with excema, but have flares about once every 21 years [that's the average so far]. My hair is thick, my nails are strong, and my skin is smooth. I am physically capable of running and exercising. My vision is 20/15 [although sadly I think that's decreasing with prolonged computer usage at work :(... ]. And, as far as I know, my memory is still working the way it should ;).  I'm not trying to brag; My point is - I didn't eat processed foods growing up, and I try not to now. Don't think I never do, because that's just not true - I love pizza like fish love water. I've found though, that when I eat it, I usually feel sluggish for longer than I'd like afterwards.

I bought this book several years back and loved every page. It's a short read, but direct and simple.
love it, michael pollan!
Basically. :)
Anyway, if I stay here much longer, this rant may never end.
Tonight, Jessica and I made a run to WFM to pick up a few essentials for dinner at her place. We got to cooking: chicken, sweet potatoes, sauteed veggies, homemade guacamole and lemon water. It was incredible. Rob joined us, and we continued on our winning night to some Yahtzee. [When was the last time you played?]

Here's what that looked like for Rob & Jessica:
yahtzee 6's for rob | yahtzee 4's for jess!
I struck out on this one, but it's been about 15 years since Rob played the game, so I didn't mind letting him beat me the first round. Haha. Jessica took both games [THIS TIME, Jess. THIS ONE TIME :p.. ], but we'll be back to battle it out. ;)

Good friends. Good food. Good gaming. That's my kind of Tuesday!

[Well That's Just] INSANITY

Before I get into the meat of this entry, this is a dedication for Ali:
If you are reading this and in a spot today where you need a little encouragement, I hope maybe that helps. I know my friends are each irreplaceable for their own reasons, and I'm grateful to have them as support. I hope I can be an equally-supportive shoulder for each of them when it's needed, too! So Ali - chin up, dear friend.. it all happens for a reason. Love you!

This also seemed appropriate, in the spirit of supporting others, and because it's just. so. daggone COLD out there! [thank you, Facebook!]

Wouldn't it be amazing if we all DID this?! #Dreamer

Anywho, my day consisted of the standard whirlwind of work, after which I headed home thinking it would be straight to the kitchen for dinner. Instead, Rob surprised me with suggesting we open up and dig into my copy of Insanity.

I said, well... OKAY! :D

I will take the standard "body shots" for the before & after records a little later on; tonight was just the fit test :)
insanity... rawwrr!!
Stay tuned! We'll be bustin' out of winter clothes just in time for summer fun haha.. Maybe. Cheer for us in the meantime, ok? :p

Then & Now : Memoirs to Me

I've been a prolific journaler [shh.. I know] for as long as I can remember; my mom has often shared with me the many manuscripts arranging my many legitimate struggles...

... at like, age five. What can I say? Life was pretty rough, when
"... I and can't have and the and turkoys [turquoise] doll and because Santa got and me the purple one and for Christmas."
My love of conjunctions started early on, an indication of my aptitude development.

Anyway, I read yesterday THIS, authored by none other than my fellow star-chaser Marianne. She raised several interesting points just by penning this thing to her future self, something I coincidentally also did in 2004. I committed last night to unearthing some of those words, penned inevitably during a phase of angsty, pre-twenties self-discovery. And loathing. And soul-searching. And so on... and so on.
ohhhhhhh, the aaaaaangst....
Uh-huh. :|

So here's what I did: I went and in fact unearthed that duct tape-covered composition book [complete with some tattooed Dashboard Confessional lyrics, for effect #emoproblems...], which contained everything from my grocery lists [?], to random and elicited observations re: my little world of college things, and stickers, tickets & other miscellaneous swag from all the cutting-edge things/places I was going. In hindsight, I was just collecting for some imaginary scrapbook that materialized in the form of a misshapen novel.. with bumper stickers.

Folks, I naturally preferred hard-copy over e-filing in 2004, and from the looks of this, I was holed up in a corner of the 13th floor [the 'Quiet Floor' reserved for the most studious dormers, for those of you who remember Calhoun Hall].  Secluded in the vacant, dimly-lit corner of a study hall, silent but in that very way, so. EMOTIONALLY CHAOTIC... If that doesn't paint the angst for you, well..... idk.

So here's an excerpt from 2004. I wasn't much of an Headline gal in the early 2000's, so there was no other title to this other than the date:

March 10, 2004
[a Wednesday]

I swear to God I will NOT be here in 10 years. There's no way in hell that I'll feel like this in 10 years. There's no way in hell that this shit will still be getting the best of me in 10 years. I mean it.

[Okay, as a prelude to this: 2004 was my sophomore year of college, and a/the point of my life where I, for lack of better explanation, abandoned a lot of what I stood for, including {apparently} my manners, class, faith, dignity and a bunch of other relatively essential qualities. Just an FYI; carry on....]

I made a list of New Year's Resolutions 2 months ago and haven't kept more than 2 of them. HELL YEAH! Great start, right? I thought I would be advantageous this year and reinvent the wheel, but who am I kidding? I can't even find common ground with half the people around me.

I wonder a LOT about where I'll be in 10 years. If I'll be in this city. This state. This country. If I'll still have the same friends. At this rate, I almost HOPE I don't. That's sad. I need people who I can relate to, for REAL reasons. Not because we're both Filipino. Or because we're in the same classes all morning for 3 days a week. Or because we both play soccer. Or because we live in the same dorm. Or because we're both eating food at the same place at the same time. THESE are why I'm friends with over half of my friends... and THAT sucks. I miss my REAL friends [from my hometown; remember I'm only a year into this whole living-away-from-home thing] and know that I'm just going through the motions here. God I'm lame.

I'm dating a guy who's clingy, not supportive and stupidly obsessed with his hair. Call me shallow, but if you can't get your shit together for the day JUST because your hair isn't cooperating? Grow a pair. He has an intellectual brain though, and for some reason I can't seem to part with it. I just wish he was more..... I dunno, grounded.

I flopped on the new year's resolutions, so I wonder if by the time I'm almost 30 in ten years, maybe I'll get it together?

Goals: 10 years out [in no particular order]:
* Graduate college
* Get a job. A real job.
* Visit another country. Maybe 2.
* Find real friends. Or stay socially-removed until I'm ready to figure out what that means.
* STOP letting people down.
* Get a tattoo.
* Think about marriage when dating. Not immediately, but if he even has potential. Otherwise don't waste your time.
* Get home more often.
* Repair broken relationships.
* Run more. Remember how soccer was the highlight of your life now... do NOT let it control your life in 10 years.
* Live somewhere other than Cincinnati. Or even Ohio.
* Stop procrastinating on EVERYthing you do. And when you decide TO do something, don't push yourself so hard that you exhaust everything you have: time, social life, money, ambitions.
* Remember how you felt TODAY: Confused about what you actually want out of life. Broken because you've relied on yourself and not on God for the things you need, even though you know better. You're lonely, confused, hurt and broken by the damage of bad friendships and superficial relationships. You're not excited to see what the future holds - honestly, you're afraid of it and that's not what should be happening. You don't EVER want to be in this place, ever again.

Get a hold of yokurself, Corin. You're better than this.
*******
I condensed that down from the near 4 comp pages it consumed when I originally wrote it, but in reading it, the feelings came back. The intensity of that moment feels vague now, but not the sense of confusion and helplessness. The dark place they usher in was a place I revisited just a few short years back, and I found my way out then, too, but with a strength I didn't know I even had.

I've thought it appropriate for a while now to extend some sort of homage to my former self, and in the process perhaps a couple of notes for the future me. Thanks again for the inspiration, Mare!

To Corin, 2004:

First things first, it gets better. It gets bad again here and there, but the beauty outweighs the pain tenfold. You finished college, and you have that job that you truly love. You have a small but irreplaceable network of true friends on whom you can rely when you're doing well and when you aren't. Out of an incredibly un-ideal situation came the most beautiful child you've ever known; she is a reflection of the love you want to show the world, and continues to impress you every day. She calls you mama and there's not a moment of the struggle you would trade to have her changing your world every day. You have two tattoos, one of which you got on a random outing with the girl who inspired this time-traveling letter. You've lived in a couple different states, been to a couple other countries and are on the home stretch of preparation for a missions trip to Panama. You're engaged to a guy who makes you crazy, but in the ways you laugh about, not the ones on which a relationship actually hinges. He brought you out of a place void of emotions altogether, let alone happiness. He is patient, funny and supportive of your dreams, goals and ambitions. You are still flighty when it comes to certain grown-up things: taxes, health insurance, financial portfolios. < You will probably never fully comprehend the logistics of those things, but you're doing better. You've learned to finally start speaking up when you're dissatisfied with something, instead of bottling it to the point of combustion like you did for the first 25ish years. You're no expert, but you're getting better. You still procrastinate on small things, and when you invest yourself wholly into something, you still haven't mastered the art of pacing yourself. You're damaged, imperfect and a constant work in progress, but know this: You are happy. You are growing. You are loved.

And Corin, 2025:

That was twenty years ago now that you took your duct taped journal and stowed away in the corner of a dormitory, ridden with confusion, loneliness and anxiety. It was thirteen years ago that you relapsed into that dark place, and vowed to never repeat it ever again. You lost parts of yourself that you won't ever get back, but in the process learned more about your limits, recognized your strengths and weaknesses, and acknowledged that you can't do this on your own - and that you don't need to. You don't need to prove that to anyone, regardless of what you always thought. You've redefined real strength as pursuing your faith and letting go of toxic things and people. That's important, so don't forget that, okay?

Your daughter is 15, which I can guess now has its own set of stresses and joyous moments alike. You're married to the man whose engagement ring you're wearing now in 2015, and continuing to grown and learn together with him just as you are now. I'm going to guess we've since added a few mini's to the family; I'm excited for us to look back on this moment now wondering what he, she or they will be like.

Twenty years ago, you were a hot mess, going through your emo everything stage. You thought you could outsmart the system of life, but weren't smart enough to see the depths of your insecurities and inexperience. You fought back against wiser peers and council who tried to help you, because quite frankly, you weren't ready to face the reality that vulnerability isn't inherently evil. Thirteen years ago, you fought tooth and nail for a failing marriage before you were able to level with the fact that the only way your daughter had a fighting chance of life in a happy household, was to divide yours and pray that two separate but functional households would bloom out of its ashes.

You did that thing where you shut down emotionally, first to the world, then to those closest to you, and then to yourself. You were a drone for months, surviving on faith and desperate hopes that you were right. You struggled like most wouldn't believe with the guilt of divorce, wrestled with how that conflicted with your core beliefs and waited almost two years after your divorce to finally start forgiving yourself for the ways in which you failed and disappointed yourself and those involved. You became intentional about your time, and even more selective about who would be permitted to get close. You were scared of hurting them in the long run, but learned over time that that would only happen if YOU give permission and YOU choose to let little things turn into big things. You are slowly earning your bachelors degree in Letting Things Go, and are making great strides in the section about harboring bitterness, resentment and pride.

In 2015, you're a work in progress. This is your first full year of your 30's, and you are happy.
You still hate tomatoes and pickles, but have managed to eat bananas without wanting to vomit. You don't smoke, and as far as drinking goes, you officially have next to zero tolerance, which isn't actually a bad thing. You don't work out as much as you should, but you're bent on reverting back to old habits in that regard, which include committing to a half marathon before the year is over. You are head over heels - often literally - with yoga, and have disproved every single one of your college-conceived notions of its principles. Your parents are visibly aging, but still as vivacious and fun as ever. Sydni is the light of their lives and she knows it. You're ready for the future, and are on the hunt for ways to ensure that it's a culmination of your investments now. You wish you could still eat whatever you wanted, but your body isn't going to let that happen.

You're only an adult based on the time you've spent on the earth; your heart is still young. You are aware the heartache and disappointment are inevitable, but you are more secure with your abilities and limits in coping than ever before. You have an acute sense of detection for and equally sensitive disdain for the artificial - things, people and situations and are no longer hesitant to eliminate them from your life.

You're not the perfect human, and you will never be perfect in the eyes of every beholder. But, here's one thing that you KNOW to be truth [& then some] as you walk into 2015:
#truth!
Love your life at 40, because 30's lookin' like it's gonna be tough to beat.

Trains & Great Wolf Lodge

Trains, trains, TRAINS!

Anyone who knows my dad knows that his affinity for trains has been a lifelong thing. The Drenn Lodge, as I've affectionately always named their home up north, now has a train display where there once was a loft lounge, and they are launching a full scale village to go along with it.
dixie union station!
Today we met with them at a specialty train shop, where Dad was able to gather ideas for his vision [& let's be honest, Mom too, as she'll be the real civil engineer here..].

Be it the small shop it was, it was certainly packed with all things trains, and quite a bit of history if you looked closely enough.
dixie train station | mason, oh
dixie train station | mason, oh

tiiiiiny little people..
... tiiiiiiny little expensive people.
syd marvelling at the village
cute little houses!
so much detail!
I had to include these, because I often forget just how Italian my mother really is.. until I see pictures like this. She may or may not have been speaking actual words; she's a seasoned Italian-hand signer.. haha.

We wrapped up at the train shop once Dad and Mom were armed with material, ideas and determination to get their own village up to speed, and we were off. Sydni had done an exceptional job of being patient for the hour or so that we were in the train shop, despite our frequent instructing of DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING.

Her reward?
a day at gwl!
Syd went bananas when we stepped foot into Great Wolf Lodge; she knew that although we weren't going to the water park itself, we were going to be there for a while, and the day was now all about Magic Quests, arcade games and ice cream.

And fun :)
welllll hi there!
these two.... hahaha
Day outings with Nana & Pappy are the BEST

We bid adieu [for now] after a long day of trains and play, and headed back home, where the day for Sydni wasn't over yet. We had one more belated Christmas present for her from Nana & Pappy:

We've read this book three times already tonight; it's super cute.

What an awesome day, amiright?! :D

Love.. love... and more love.
See ya tomorrow!

Bronte & Pinkie Bucks

yiiiieeeeeee!!
AMEN!

Every once in a while, a Friday will roll around and we'll be on semi cruise control, as there's not always a lot of movement as the week closes out. Today was the absolute opposite, reflecting the four prior days that came and went at a very similar full throttle pace.

Elisa and I were charged with the lunch run, a task rewarded by the culinary wonders of Bronte Bistro in Rookwood. No complaints here!
salmon nicoise (:
Our plates were cleared [well, for the most part] when we all parted ways for the next couple of days. I headed off to Milford to pick up Sydni, thus the birth of our next and newest project: Operation Pinkie Bucks.

pinkie bucks! ♥♥
You see, I learned today from Mindi that for the first time ever, Sydni intentionally acted out while she was there during the day. That might not phase most parents, but of the few people we have here who've known Sydni for as far back as Mindi has, it's more than unusual. On top of that, she's been digressing in her consistency with having potty accidents.

For all my fellow mommy friends out there: I already know by way of general survey that I'm not alone in facing many of the challenges of kiddos as they grow into and out of all the different stages of kiddo development. The milestones are different for every kid. I'm no clinical psychologist, but I don't need a magnifying glass to see that every human alive responds differently to stress. Sydni's situation [the new little half-sister, obviously on his side] is obviously a huge adjustment for any child to face.

Syd, I've learned [yenno, from hanging out with her for about I dunno, the 5 years & some change that she's been... well, alive..], it's that she has to know that whatever she's doing, that it has purpose and that she owns it. That's basic principle for most of us, but how do you tell a 5-year-old that she suddenly is expected to share everything she has, including her family, with this new baby - who for now cries a lot and steals the spotlight in many ways, without her feeling like somehow she's been sidelined? You don't. What I know I can do for her, is to give her some other purpose, even a temporary one, that is 100% hers. It's a small thing, really, but to her, it's something she can control.

So here's the deal, folks:

Sydni wants THIS:
my little pony | equestria girls
pinkie pie
[Yes, btw, My Little Pony now has people characters.] We're lookin' at a whopping 12ish bucks for this one, but I wanted to make this hers. So she's earning it. For each day that we avoid having accidents, she'll get a buck. That couples with no more of these minor behavioral glitches; if she's mindful of them both and intentional about her actions each day, she'll earn $1 towards buying it. Let me tell you this - we've been committed to this for about 5 hours now, and she's elated that she just earned her first Pinkie Buck. I'm excited for her. ♥

I think it's gonna be a great weekend. Tomorrow it's Mom & Dad [aka Nana & Pappy] and whatever else we find ourselves getting into.

Make it a great weekend, blogbots! ♥
