I. AM. THIRTY. (O.o)

My first inclination today was to find one picture of me for each year up to now.. yenno, like those giant frames parents have in their house for each kid moving up through school grades. I then decided that that was a lot more effort than necessary for now. Plus, I'm in Illinois, a rough 8 hours from my parents' house, which is where most of said pictures are stored. So yeah.. maybe later?

Anyway, I'm 30! Hooooly cow!
I thought for good measure, I would at least throw in what is one of the first photographs ever taken of me. I know you're already seeing it, but as a caption: This is the first picture my [now] parents ever saw of me. This was the picture that made them confirm that I would become their daughter, and they my parents. As you can see, it's not much to go from... I call that... LOVE.
#tbt : sometime in 1985?
Haha. Awh..

Yeeeeup. So to start off my birthday, we woke up at our leisure and hung around Dillon's house for a while. The iPad had of course come along for the long trip, and Sydni was bound and determined to "teach" Dillon how to properly play one of her games.
gooooot it, mr. dillon??
Too funny. Once we finally got ourselves in gear, it was off to see Rob's Dad's side of the family. We had a perfect, relaxing afternoon with his dad, stepmom, sister, nieces and Sydni. His sister Carissa was kind enough to host Sydni for a sleepover with her daughter Ella for the night, so to free up our evening. It took Sydni a little bit of warm-up time to get used to the new surroundings, but once she was comfortable - and realized there was a kitty - we were all good!
my little animal-lover ♥
ella. sydni. kate.
^^ Kate & Bob bought Sydni a clay set as an early Christmas present, just in case the logistics of Christmas time don't lend to us actually being there. I still can't believe how thoughtful it was, and in case there's any question - Sydni LOVES it. [[Thank You!!!]]

Rob and I eventually left Sydni with Carissa & Ella, and made a pitstop at Rural King before heading back to Dillon's. I shouldn't have been surprised when Rob spotted a remote-controlled helicopter on the way out... and bought it.

For himself. :p

.... Boys ;).
We finally pulled ourselves off the couch and away from the marathon of Dog Shows on TV, dressed up a little, and headed back south to Collinsville for dinner and whatever else the night may have had in store for us.

In lieu of the recent "events" blanketing the St. Louis area, we opted out of The Landing, Soulard, even The Loop. Instead, we cozied up at a table inside Friday's South, on Main Street in Collinsville. We ordered up some food and waited for Jesse to arrive.

He did, with some others in tow, and the night got started.
thanks, guys for the birthday support!! :D
Here's the list of what I consumed tonight to commemorate my farewell to my 20's:

1 beer. 1 shot.
Aaaaaaand.. that's it.
Oh wait, I lied. After both of those, I think I drank about 3 gallons of water. Literally.
And I wasn't alone. The bartender [bless his little hipster soul] found out that it was my birthday, and conned me into a shot of Rumplemints. Never in my life have I wanted as badly to vomit the entire contents of my being, but it happened, it's over and I survived. What a lush I am. Strangely enough, this may have been one of THE best nights out that I've had in a while. I'm denying that this is because I'm 30 now. It's because I basically have always been a rotten drinker and people watching in Collinsville was more fun anyway ;).
........ animals, i tell ya. #h20!
My 30th birthday has FINALLY passed; it's been just about a 5-month lead-up to this day, what with the Jamaica getaway, Nashville getaway and everything in between, mostly from Rob♥. I am so insanely grateful for another year, and I intend to wholly embrace the big 3-0. A million & 1 thanks to my family & friends for everything up to now, and going forward. You guys... are the bestest.

Okay 30, I'm ready. Are YOU?! ♥

Illinois Thanksgiving... GO.

I forgot to mention that this Thanksgiving weekend is pretty much going to be a blur by the time it's over, so if nothing else, these blog entries are for my own sanity of sorting it out when the dust settles.

Wednesday night we made our way north to Mt. Vernon, yesterday was our family Thanksgiving feast, and today we were back in Cincinnati for a few short hours so that Rob could work a half day. Sydni and I maximized the hours by cleaning the house, doing laundry and packing up again for the last leg of our Thanksgiving weekend, and soon enough found ourselves on the road again, west-bound to Illinois.

Fast forward through the 5-hour roadtrip to our first landing point at Rob's mom's. We stopped by primarily to visit with them, but also because she wanted to give Sydni her late birthday/early Christmas present: A Midieval Princess Dress!

She loves it. Thank you, Carolyn!!!

We're now at Dillon's; the boys took off to go do their own thing, and Sydni and I are busying ourselves with some good old fashioned mama-mini snuggle time to some cartoons.

Hello, Illinois! ♥

xo | cmd

Happy Thanksgiving, from Ohio!

First things first:
from our family to you & yours, with love! ♥
In the spirit of giving thanks, here's my little two cents on the things for which I am without a doubt grateful on this day:

God's Graciousness!
Say what you will on this one; I know for a fact that I don't deserve anything that I daily consider to be mine, and I sure as shine didn't do anything to earn the life of liberty & happiness that I have. If there's one thing I do know about this day, it's that the road to comfortable life was one paved well before my time, through the promises of Christ. If you may doubt my resolve in this arena, I would love to talk with you! ♥

My FAMILY.
That's a given, yes, but let's face it: Family ties are what can bring out both the best and worst in us, and at the same time validate much of why we do what we do. With my family being as blended as it is, I am beyond grateful for the bonds that've been created by way of our unique little collection of family that sometimes supersedes those created by blood. We love, banter, disagree and resolve with the best of them, but at the end of the day, we are there by choice for one another, and have zero doubt that we won't ever fall without being caught.

Sydni.
She's 5 now and brings to the table everything I apparently did when I was 5. I can't say that I remember much of my single-digit years, but from what the older family members tell me, she's a spitting image of little me. Never in a million years would I have ever imagined learning as much from such a tiny person as I have through my daughter. I see the world through an entirely different light when I'm with her, and am reminded of the innocence, compassion, unconditional love and forgiveness that is clearly missing in so many adult lives.

Rob.
I am dating my best friend. Time has sealed much of the emptiness and emotional static that had taken over me towards the end of my own failed marriage, and at that time I wasn't sure that I wanted, let alone would ever want to invest myself into another person again for fear of reliving the same set of disappointments. With the patient, compassionate honesty from which he himself stems, he helped me reach into and focus on rebuilding the deepest parts of me that had been so damaged. He was patient. He was kind. He was funny. He waited until I was ready to start over, and when I was, he was there to ensure that not one second of insecurity would find its way in. He is still that person, and has given so much of himself not only for my sake, but for Sydni, and for us as a family unit. I absolutely am dating my best friend, and although he might say he needs me, it's me who has grown and continues to grow because of him.

Our Uniformed Men & Women
Life in America  hasn't been a calm ride over the last few months; the national headlines reflect the chaos and boiling tempers of both sides over the altercation between a Black teenager and a White cop, that left the teenager dead. Emotional turmoil has erupted into nationwide riots, looting, destruction of property and violence. I've never personally experienced life on the front-lines, but whether it is overseas defending the same freedom of speech privilege that we here at home are abusing, daily endeavoring out into local law enforcement, or anywhere in between: Men & Women are risking their lives, safety and inclusion in their own families for the rest of us. I have seen so much hatred in the last few weeks alone, directed in its majority to the police forces around the country, and it makes me sad. Yes, there is corruption in nearly every organization, but to those men and women who choose to exercise honesty, integrity and dedication to the oaths you took, I applaud you and want to remind you that you are greatly, greatly appreciated.

My.. AND Your Employment.
I take my job for granted sometimes, but more often than that, I take other people's jobs for granted, too. We are one giant circle of service, and I fail a lot at recognizing that without the HVAC repair tech, we might be cold this year. Without the Electric companies, we'd be sitting around in the dark. Without the grocery store clerks, we wouldn't have anything outside what farms could directly produce [which, imagine that... I love the thought, but that's for another day!]. NO job, no matter how menial it seems, should be taken for granted; I am thankful for mine and the lifestyle it aids to provide me, and for you, your employer & the work ethic you clearly have to maintain your job.

Good Health.
Cancer SUCKS. Muscular Dystrophy SUCKS. Autism SUCKS. There is a seemingly endless list of sucky conditions that strike maybe when least expected, and rock families and individuals to the core. I've seen the ripple cancer causes to a family; within my own family, we've seen it. I've watched incredible people deteriorate physically - though not mentally - at the hands of MD. I've enjoyed the company of Autistic children, and realized they are sensational humans. I have experienced the shattering heartache of suicide resulting from unresolved depression. I wish NONE of those people had to suffer by way of affliction, but I know the lessons we derive from their journeys are hard-fought and usually well-applied to the prevention, treatment and education to others. As an adoptee, this is an issue that has always been in the back of my mind; I do not have extensive knowledge of my biological medical history, and at any moment, I could lose the health I have to something genetically-predicted. I am blessed, I know this, to have my health. That my daughter is healthy. That my parents, sister, cousins, aunts, uncles and friends are, for the most part, in stellar health.

********

There's a multitude of other things for which I am grateful this year [and every year, for that matter], but that's a solid start and I'll leave it alone for now. Tonight, I was fortunate to spend Thanksgiving with part of the family on my mother's side. My cousin Stephanie cooked a dinner that was not a speck short of divine, and we celebrated my birthday.

It's Thursday, so it's fitting to throw out a #TBT in honor of this Lego table! Sydni found it in the basement in no time, and as it happens, this is the same table my cousins and I played on for hours when we were the same age. Love!
mini me @ the lego table we had as kids!
And this..... is a memo for myself for a later date, to remind my cousin Mark that we'll need a few things for the house ;). These are just two of the pieces he's crafted for his own house - 3 if you include the wall shelves behind the bar. Mark's a wood-working mastermind and I'm thankful for that, too! :D

Happy Thanksgiving, to you and yours. I hope it's been incredible, just like ours!

Fresh Thyme Tuesday

To piggyback off my thoughts yesterday:

Please... if you are reading this for whatever reason, realize that our national headlines are going to have a permanent impact, regardless of who, where or what you are. This has created a ripple that will not soon dissipate; our generation is in the thick of it, but please don't believe that we'll be the last to acknowledge it on a very personal level.

In my opinion, social media platforms provide more of a curse than a blessing when it comes to reflection on national headlines - especially the controversial ones. I passively scrolled through bold statements, blame, opinions, questions, confusion and mixed emotions in my newsfeed throughout last night and the early part of today. There are people clearly marked on one side or the other, people in the middle who seem to be in a more neutral zone, and then people like me, who think the entire situation and following actions are the product of the depravity that's taking over the world these days.

Here is, if you're that interested, my penny's worth of contribution to the conversation:

Call me naive.. call me lost in a place where unicorns and fairies live in peace.. call me whatever you want. My heart is broken for this world... for those people directly involved. For the families of people directly involved. For a community being crushed to bits by the anger, fear and frustration of people clashing against each other.

Please... pray... for Ferguson.

****
In lighter, local news, I finally made it out to Fresh Thyme today with Elisa for lunch!
yesyesyesyesyes!
This was the perfect way to escape the drudgery of the weather outside and the depressing headlines that are all I've seen all morning. Fresh Thyme is the newest neighbor in the Oakley area, and I vote YES to going back.

The night rounded out with an outing to Village Pizza in Newtown, where Becky, Rob and I were able to hang out and enjoy each other's company.

We take a lot for granted every single day... I hope someone out there will keep me accountable to remember what I've got in this little life of mine is an undeserved gift. ♥

Love & Blessings to you & yours!

YEAH, MONDAY :)

i.... love ... this!
^^ Thank you, Modo for this gem. I've read and re-read this several times and had to share it with whatever reader happens to stumble across this page. This is perfect for those Mondays that challenge me to bring my best to the table and come prepared to do some damage to the week. It gave me some fuel for this morning, and for that I am thankful!

Also, I debuted this guy at work today too: It's the product of hours in the car over the Nashville weekend, and I am claiming it as mine.. for now, at least:
pine green trinity infinity [raspberry stitch]
^^ Want that scarf? It's yours, $20, like the rest of them! ;)

As Rob and I sat and ate leftover Hattie B's for dinner tonight, we watched as the news unfolded re: Ferguson. I'm not going to sit and expand on what I'm referencing, because if you don't know by now, then you really should close my blog and read the news. My position in the matter is neutral at best, but what I will say is this:

Our nation is broken, and at a juncture now that demands prayer. It is not optional to pray for the well-being of our citizens anymore. It is crucial. It is not enough to believe that people will make well-informed, rational decisions right now, because that's not going to happen.

Please pray, whoever you are, wherever you are.. Please pray for our nation and for every single one of us living in it. We're in dire need of it.

Amen.

Hattie B's | Frist | Corvettes

*YAWN..

I am.. spent. Whoa.

Today's agenda was just as packed as yesterdays, it seemed:

First on the itinerary was checking out of the hotel and finding our way to breakfast. Brunch, if you will, based on the time we finally got to eating, but most importantly was VENUE:
heya, hattie b's!
Damanji did a killer job of hunting down a chicken+waffles spot, which made me feel much better about him being cheated of T.o.B. back in Cinci. Coincidentally, Hattie B's happens to be one of the top-rated C&W joints in the U.S., and it is of course in Nashville.

..... So Hattie B's it was!

so much deliciousness, hattie b's!
After lunch & a couple spontaneous merch pick-ups, we made one final stop at the Frist Center for Visual Arts to explore and stretch the legs before our separate trips home.
♥ these people.. so ... stinkin' ... much. ♥
And then it was goodbye, at least for now. We'll be headed westwards in just a couple of weeks to kick off the holiday traveling, so I don't doubt that I'll see them soon :). LOVE YOU GUYS!
farewell for now, nashville! ♥
Rob and I loaded up and put on our game faces for the trek back to Cincinnati, which we thought would be a straight, uninterrupted shot.

It was, until Rob spotted the National Corvette Museum from the highway, and it goes without saying that this would probably be the only time we'd ever actually go there. It was a good choice for a pitstop, though!
national corvette museum!
generations of corvettes everywhere :)
one of the several destroyed by the 2014 sinkhole :( :(
I'll give to these Corvette owners - they are a dedicated bunch!
coming together from all over!
It was certainly an interesting piece of history to see, and I'm glad we stopped. Given that we probably wouldn't have dedicated a trip solely for the sake of a visit, it's one of those places you've got to go at least once, even if you're not really a Corvette kinda person.

And now.. we are finally home and ready to unwind. I feel like this weekend was a dream, and am counting one more time before I call it a night just how thankful -- and blessed -- I am for these 3 people who did so much work to ensure my birthday weekend was perfect.

You guys are incredible. Love you!!

Birthday Surprises, Part 2 : NASHVILLE!!

My friends brought me to Nashville. My friends brought me to Nashville. My friends brought me to Nashville. My friends brought me to Nashville. My friends brought me to Nashville. My friends brought me to Nashville. My friends brought me to Nashville. My friends brought me to Nashville. My friends brought me to Nashville. My friends brought me to Nashville. My friends brought me to
Nashville.
[& this entry is backdated..]

Have I mentioned lately how much these people ROCK?!

I woke up this morning, obediently packed a bag of stuff that I hoped would suffice whatever excursion was planned for the rest of the weekend, and loaded up for the drive to an undisclosed point B.

Well, undisclosed until the signs started adding up and eventually flat-out stated NASHVILLE, EXIT HERE.

My friends brought me to Nashville.
My friends brought me to Nashville.
My friends brought me to Nashville.
My friends brought me to Nashville!

It's photo overload time. I'll try to group this together as concisely as possible:

First things first: We landed in Nashville and voted for food before hotel check-in:
Hog Heaven was our stop: an off-the-path, dive BBQ place that I will see again.
this place. yesssssss!
After lunch, we started off again, en route to our hotel, which I didn't realize was THE Opryland Hotel, until we passed through the gates:
opryland!
beautiful opryland!! ♥
We toured the inside of Opryland for almost 2 hours, and we still didn't see the entire thing; this place reminds me of The Alamo in Texas, with the cute water and restaurants. We've decided already that we'll be back:
best! ♥
favorites, in nashville!

We wouldn't have been taking full advantage of our tourist status without a trip to Opry Mills, so once we'd toured what we could of Opryland, we set off on a course for the mall:
opry mills!
rainforest cafe | aquarium restaurant
We ate dinner at the Aquarium Restaurant to round out our shopping excursion [of which we all took full advantage, fyi ;).. ] and headed back to the hotel to ready up for the night, and take one last tour of the Christmas set up inside Opryland:
merry christmas, here at opryland!!
The time finally came for us to hit the main drag in Nashville, and I felt privileged to be taking 3 of my closest friends, all of whom have never been to Nashville.

broadway!
If you've never been to Nashville, I would highly recommend that it goes on your bucket list. Anywhere on your list will do, but if you live in the continental U.S., put it close to the top. The place is a blast. :D
a synopsis of my night with these incredible people!!
rob, ali, damanji: i love you guys. ♥
Here's a hilarious kicker for the night:
there is... no way.. hahaha...
^ That guy? His name is Zach, and I haven't seen him in 11 years. I come to Nashville for ONE weekend, and run into him, 7 hours away from our small hometown and totally without warning. Chalk this up for MVHS, and our graduating class of 2003 - Zach it was GREAT seeing you - what a small frikkin' world, and an incredibly pleasant surprise!!

[I'm still not over running into a high school alum down here!]

It finally came time for us to bid adieu to downtown Nashville, #hashtagthepanda included:
hilarious :p
Rob managed to get the four of us, achy feet and all, back to Opryland, where the gorgeous lights met us and reminded us one last time for the night that this place is just... perfect.
♥ opryland | nashville, tn
Goodnight, Nashville!

BIRTHDAY SURPRISES, PART I

say whaaaaaaat!?
You see THAT?
I'm still at something of a COMPLETE loss of words over what's unfolding so far this weekend.

My guess is that everyone except me was savvy to the underlying plans for tonight, but as keen as I usually am to people being sneaky [the good way & the bad way... :| .. ], I was not expecting nor prepared for my friends to walk through the door.

My friends FROM ILLINOIS.

Before I had any idea what was happening, this was already happening:
... to ohio they were going....
Rob had managed to coordinate a birthday weekend for me that included two of my best friends of Illinois, Becky, Brandon.. AND....
ahhhh!!!
I'm FLOORED.
My friends are here. I'm apparently supposed to pack a bag for tomorrow, because we're heading somewhere.. that they won't disclose.

THESE. SNEAKY. PEOPLE.
[how I love them SO!]

Brother Bear's Return!

It's #TBT, which was perfectly timed for today.

There is a handful of faces from my past to which I still make efforts to stay connected; this guy is one of them:
circa.... 2008?
Yeah, this guy was an older brother to me for a few years, and someone I considered [and still do] one of my favorite friends along the way. We ran in the same close-knit circle of friends for several years and then eventually strayed separate ways via life, jobs, moving and all that fun stuff that gets in the way of people living in their early 20's forever. He's now living in Texas and I'm now back in Ohio for the third [and hopefully final] time.

I hadn't seen him in probably almost 2 years.
say whaaaaaaat?!
today! 11.20.14
And THEN, I went to Northside for lunch with Elisa and Becky, and from the parlour at Melt in Northside, I spotted this dapper dude strolling down the sidewalk outside.

No. WAY! :D

Brother bear, it was terrific getting to see you today, even just briefly. What a small world! I hope Texas continues to treat you well, and maybe I'll swing through the next time I find myself that way!
one more from the archives, 2007 : family dinner!
nalom. james. me. ladd. catie.
^^ Love those people ♥

Small world we live in :)

Happy Thursday!

Happy Birthday, Shef!

Since I made/used this last year to commemorate this guy's birthday, I'm going to take the easy road and do the same thing this year... since I haven't seen him since that last time :(
Add caption
HAPPY BIRTHDAY [30th, at that]
TO THIS GUY!

Shef, I hope you had an incredible birthday, and that year 30 is all it can be & more. You've earned it! I hope Cali continues to treat you well, and if we're in the same small hometown at the same time this year, I hope to at least say hi :). HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

Here in my little world, it was a client facility tour day, which warranted jeans for the day. That of course made office yoga that much more enticing.... and long story short, this:
itty bitty bakasana :)
^ Those jeans were not interested in any sort of ground work today, but that just made it all the more challenging, and when you're learning to float like I am, it was kind of fun.

Anyway, we just finished up dinner at Main Street with Jess; Chad wasn't working tonight since he's apparently called off Wednesdays for volleyball and life forever thereafter, haha.. but still fun either way.

So far so good on the week! See ya tomorrow, blogbots!

[First] SSSSSSSSNOOWW!

Ohhhh, Sydni you lucky bug!

Here's one of those "old folk" moments where I get to say,

"When I was your age..... "
She had her first official snow day today, which did and didn't surprise me:
I wasn't surprised because it seems like it takes a lot less these days to warrant closing down, but a bit surprised, even offended in that joking-way as I thought back to the days when the drift would be halfway up our front door in the morning and we were still expected at our seats when the class bell rang.

Aaaaaanywho - it's our first snow of the year!
my backyard (:
^^ (See? Noooot really that much snow)... Gorgeous, nonetheless!

Here's some shots I stole from my sister, back home at her property:
gorgeous work, sis!
^^ She's up by my parents, which is North a few hours; their snowfall is usually a bit heavier than ours, and she's the lucky one of us who had time today to get out with a lens to capture it all. ♥ them!

Needless to say, it was a slow day at work, but I made up time afterwards on a couple of knitting projects that are kicking off the winter season. [Rob also warmed this place up with his signature turkey burgers; remind me next time to share that recipe!]
blueberry trinity infinity ["raspberry" stitch]
for elisa :)
orange lorne infinity
for rebecca :)
There will be plenty more knitting to come in the next several weeks as we prepare for Christmas. It's the perfect snowy day escape. Back to it!

STAY WARM & STAY SAFE, FRIENDS!
