Whew, Wednesday.

Here's something that I don't do nearly as often as I should:

I'm fortunate to have a boss who understands me from a deeper level than daily clusters [& flusters] of activity in the office, and can sit me down in his office with a simple, "what's UP [with you]?"

Wednesdays are a good time to recount my steps taken through the week so far, and in doing so, count the ones moving forward and map out the path to take. I'm perpetually awful at delegating, so too often I find that while I'm still moving in the right direction, I'm slowed by nothing other than my own stubborn refusal to lighten the load and share it with fellow travelers.

I know; that's a little to deep for just work stuff, but it's true. My job is one shared by many all over the country [& technically in Canada & South Africa as well], and there are days that are, despite our best efforts, prove to be not only thankless, but wholly depleting of any confidence, steam and fragment of sanity we may have had walking into it. BUT THEN, there are the days that come with a mission of triumph, happy coincidences and birthing of new partnerships. Our end goal is to help people, and although some days come to test endurance, character, tenacity and integrity, the others are there to lend reprieve and thank us for the work we do.

To be honest, today was one of those scattered days that felt as though I was trying to boulder straight up a bar of wet soap. I mean there's really no other way to put it. I drove home in a weird cloud-like state and collapsed into a straight line on the floor as soon as I shed bags and work material. Savasana, talk some sense into me, pleaaaase..... Flow, stretch these muscles and strengthen my brain. God, I give you my frustrations, failures and gratitude and know you are unfailing. Breathe in.. and out. In... Out. Rise... Hold... Rest. REST. For just a moment, just rest.
true story.
Volleyball was within earshot at 7:15, and came and went in a similar fashion to the day, with a player out and two others standing in, then trading the lineup mid-game - it was just as scattered as the day preceding it had been, but it was OKAY. :) We were there, in the moment, and all was well.

Rob and I jumped into tennis shoes when I got home and went for a walk, a short 2-miles of reset that was much needed for him and for me, both separately and together.

It turned out to be a beautiful experience, all wrapped up into one, otherwise ordinary Wednesday.

Happy Wednesday to you and yours, and HEY - Take a moment for yourself this week - whatever it is that you do, and just... BREATHE. It's OKAY.

Findlay Yoga?!

It's not uncommon for Elisa and I to make Findlay Market our lunch destination, but today as we sat outside in the sun and enjoyed the day, we noticed a newly-painted window on the corner building adjacent to the front patio:

All I have to say is TELL ME WHEN, AND I'M THERE.
I sent the picture to Becky for confirmation on this, and I'll be sure to share when I find out. :)

Ohhhhh... and guess what Rob and I did after work today?
We started wedding planning.... oooohhhhh...
#truth
Stay tuned for more on this; fortunately we've got plenty of time to nail our plans down. I know the time will fly by in that time, but I'm bent on walking into and out of that wedding with no debt or reason to freak out about the orchestration and execution.

Until then, have a wonderful Wednesday tomorrow, dear blogbots!

Smoky Mountains, Here We Come!

We left today for a weekend in the Smokies.

Before that could happen though, it was a prioritized early morning that began with yoga at 6AM.
That was followed by breakfast at First Watch once Becky came by to get us.

Here we go!
let's go!
Here's the before shot... I can guarantee we'll be 1) nowhere near this clean in 3 days, and 2) probably still wearing these exact clothes [still] in 3 days. We've already accepted it.

The drive through Kentucky into Tennessee is beautiful enough when you're by yourself. When you're with two of your favorite friends, it warps into something beyond a scenic drive; it becomes a 5-hour launch into hilarity, during which you spend the entirety of your time doing one of three things:

1. Sleeping
2. Eating
3. Laughing so hard that you're crying & gasping for air.

All
of those things happened within the 5-hour confinement on the way down.

WE MADE IT!

Cataloochee is our starting point for the weekend; we're here in the lower portion of the North Carolina mountains, surrounded by trees, rivers, elks and hammocks.

Our first order of business was a suspended timeout:
1-2-3, go.
just... leave... me..... here.
forever.

Our contingency plan:

We broke out the JetBoils and had a successful first night of Mountain House dinners.
let's do it...

Marianne and I managed to gather firewood; for Mare, this translated into full tree branches, but hey - noone's judging.. haha.

"wrist size or smaller.... " haha
Day 1: COMPLETE. We are here in the Smokies and ready for the weekend!

Yogis & Schtuff. (Repeat).

It's Monday.
It was beautiful out there today.

Elisa agreed:
office breaks & sunshiiiiiiiiine!
I got back to the office & found that I'd been delivered my first of perhaps many Yogi Surprise boxes!

This is absolutely their marketing taking effect, but I'd always wanted to check it out.. so, even if I only do this for a short time, it's better than never trying it out. I've already used the Rad Roller & would definitely recommend.

Pretty boring stuff for a Monday, but hey... there's the rest of the week to catch up ;).

Enjoy with gusto, blogbots!

Mini Yoga

I've been telling myself since we had our last big snowfall that I really need to [still] get Sydni some new snow pants. It's hard for me sometimes to justify that sort of thing as an immediate priority, I think mainly because in my mind, I know that the snow will fade and it won't be winter all year long.

So after work, Syd and I made a run to Target for snow pants.

Let me break that down for you: We went... to TARGET... for [JUST] snow pants.
that's about how that went
So yeah. Perhaps I didn't fully think that one through: I know better than to think I'd legitimately head into Target and buy only snow pants - I mean, assuming they even still had any [ok, they did..].

So on the bright side, we did get snow pants. AND, they were on sale. So that justifies the rest of the stuff that we bought to maybeormaybenot go along with them:

Oh, and ALL of these were for SYDNI -
Neon patterned ankle socks
Yoga pants
Mint green sports zip-up... with thumbholes
An Elsa shirt
A Little mermaid nightgown
A $1 tiara
It could've been worse, right?
So we headed home, where Sydni immediately wanted to climb into her new yoga pants and unroll her yoga mat [also purchased by me at Target on a separate, entiiiiirely unintentional buy, of course]. I happily obliged her request to follow suit, and we spent the next hour working on her warrior pose form and taking lots of mommy-mini yoga pictures:
warrior
She's working so hard! There are still some kinks to be worked out, but we are definitely heading in the right direction:
tree pose [sorta ;)]
We have our Laura Sykora moments, too.. haha..
love my mini yoga time!
These are the memories I'm going to reflect back on and realize again and again just how fortunate I am to have such a beautiful little girl, with a beautiful little soul. She is a beacon of light on the gloomiest day, and can reverse whatever sour mood that's found me as a result of this life's grudgery. I'll cross the bridge when the time's here for her to awaken to the harshness of this world, but for now, I revel in the beauty of her innocence and and proud beyond words of what she's becoming.

Anyway Anyway, Aaaanyway...
Tomorrow's Friiiiiday & that means the weekend! WooO!

Happy Birthday, Elisa!!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ELISA!!!!
[borrowed fb photo, mandy paige photography]
Happy, HAPPY Birthday to my fabulous co-worker! [I freakin' love birthdays..]

In true my-Express-office fashion, Carri and I collaborated our efforts to celebrate Elisa today:
our little birthday spread!
A few things about Elisa that I've learned in our two years now working together:
1. She loves cats [yay!]
2. She loves yoga [double yay!]
3. She loves coffee [need I continue, really?]
4. She loves local shopping AND eating as much as I do [& emphasis on eating, because yes.]
5. She loves artsy fartsy things, too [quintuple yyyyay!]

So all of those things [& then some] being said, we did what we could to offset the fact that she had to spend her actual birthday mostly at work. :)

First things first, her cards:

Mine:
meow!
Carri's:
namaste...
Next on the list back when we were planning: CAT THINGS! Better than that, EDIBLE Cat Things:
^^ Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU again to Allie @ Tu-Tu Sweet for creating exactly what I envisioned for these fun little guys! They [as they always are with Allie] were PERFECT PURRRFECT!

Cats. Yoga. CHECK.

To knock out the Coffee AND Local Shopping part, I went with this:
french press + local shopping = win!
coffee emporium | cincinnati, oh
Yiiieee!!! ♥

What else did I say she liked? Oh, yeahyeah - artsy fartsy things! Carri knocked this one out of the park with her gift:
is a-w-e-s-o-m-e!
I weighed in with what I could on the note of artsy fartsy things, because also [not on the above-mentioned list] I know she also shares my affinity for quirky socks. So artsy deco on socks is pretty much a given.
cozy toes!!!
The birthday girl herself!!
haha yeahhh!
Overall, I think we did pretty good ;)
happy birthdayyyyyyy!!! meow!
Happy, HAPPY birthday to one of my favorite working girls [+ extra birthday shout-out to her real life twin brother, Eric!], a kindred spirit in many ways and an all around amazingly down-to-earth person. Cheers to you for the next year & everything in it!
"work yoga twins"
OH, and there's a follow up to this that will be taking place next weekend.. so stay tuned for that :)

YAY, BIRTHDAYS!!!!

YEAH, MONDAY :)

i.... love ... this!
^^ Thank you, Modo for this gem. I've read and re-read this several times and had to share it with whatever reader happens to stumble across this page. This is perfect for those Mondays that challenge me to bring my best to the table and come prepared to do some damage to the week. It gave me some fuel for this morning, and for that I am thankful!

Also, I debuted this guy at work today too: It's the product of hours in the car over the Nashville weekend, and I am claiming it as mine.. for now, at least:
pine green trinity infinity [raspberry stitch]
^^ Want that scarf? It's yours, $20, like the rest of them! ;)

As Rob and I sat and ate leftover Hattie B's for dinner tonight, we watched as the news unfolded re: Ferguson. I'm not going to sit and expand on what I'm referencing, because if you don't know by now, then you really should close my blog and read the news. My position in the matter is neutral at best, but what I will say is this:

Our nation is broken, and at a juncture now that demands prayer. It is not optional to pray for the well-being of our citizens anymore. It is crucial. It is not enough to believe that people will make well-informed, rational decisions right now, because that's not going to happen.

Please pray, whoever you are, wherever you are.. Please pray for our nation and for every single one of us living in it. We're in dire need of it.

Amen.

Happy Birthday, Shef!

Since I made/used this last year to commemorate this guy's birthday, I'm going to take the easy road and do the same thing this year... since I haven't seen him since that last time :(
Add caption
HAPPY BIRTHDAY [30th, at that]
TO THIS GUY!

Shef, I hope you had an incredible birthday, and that year 30 is all it can be & more. You've earned it! I hope Cali continues to treat you well, and if we're in the same small hometown at the same time this year, I hope to at least say hi :). HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

Here in my little world, it was a client facility tour day, which warranted jeans for the day. That of course made office yoga that much more enticing.... and long story short, this:
itty bitty bakasana :)
^ Those jeans were not interested in any sort of ground work today, but that just made it all the more challenging, and when you're learning to float like I am, it was kind of fun.

Anyway, we just finished up dinner at Main Street with Jess; Chad wasn't working tonight since he's apparently called off Wednesdays for volleyball and life forever thereafter, haha.. but still fun either way.

So far so good on the week! See ya tomorrow, blogbots!

Jena: 5 Years Later

My morning opened with me lying on my back, Savasana, on my mat in the yoga studio at 5:45am. As I waited for our instructor, I breathed in the memory and life of a friend. I breathed out the sadness I still feel, along with any anger or bitterness I had, too.

Today, I owe a special note of gratitude to Jena.
Jena and I met in middle school, and were best friends for several years, before we started growing into our own lives with school, family, etc.

Five years and four days ago, Jena and I talked on the phone. She was coming back from her then-home in Texas, and I was planning a trip from Cincinnati to our hometown, and our plans to get together were made. It had been over two years since I'd seen her in person, with distance, family and daily life putting a get-together on hold. I didn't realize then that our plans would never find fruition, and that that was the last time I would ever talk to her.

Five years ago today, I was at a dinner party to celebrate the birthday of a friend here in Cincinnati. I snuck away to the upstairs bedroom where my phone was charging; Sydni wasn't yet 3 months old and I was being the paranoid new mom who abandoned her little baby with Grandma for the night [Moms, you've been there.. dramatically worried about nothing at all....]. I found two missed calls and a text message from Hilary, another friend and voice from my childhood. I called her back.

It was urgent. She was crying. Between short breaths and the unknown place my mind went for what seemed like an hour, I learned that Jena had, that night, lost her battle with depression. With her anxiety. Her fight was over.

I broke in half. I did what every survivor of someone else's suicide does on impact: I looked inward and immediately said, "This can't be real. Why?! What could I have DONE to keep this from happening?!"

This wasn't about me.
This was about what she had experienced. The pain that she must have internalized day in and day out, to the point of isolation from which she believed she would only find reprieve by making the choice to leave.

If there's anything I've learned along the way in this life, it's that time serves a mighty role in lessening the pain of loss, but it certainly doesn't erase it. When a loved one parts ways with their earthly bodies, it strips us of something. A piece of us goes with that person, and we are left to rebuild ourselves to counteract that void. Over time, those gaps become surrounded by the other ebbs and flows of our daily life, and the accumulation of gathered experiences and people that find us after that point of loss. They are still there though. They may be less noticeable on a daily basis, but they are there, and when our mind finds them for whatever reason, it is just as painful to reflect back on that loss as it was the day that it happened.

The beautiful thing that time does provide for this type of loss is the clarity of vision to more evenly focus on and celebrate that person's life, rather than dwell on the emptiness of their absence. It's not always possible to fully reflect back and smile at the thought of someone gone too soon, but when enough time has passed to satisfy our immediate grieving response, the highlights of that person's life are not only more visible, but more vivid, beautiful... gratifying.

Funny. Sentimental. Inspiring. Teaching. Triumphant.
It's not to say those gone before us lived without shortcomings and lessons hard-learned, but those things become trivial when we are able to grasp the full impact the person had on us in the first place.
love.
Jena, I am sorry.
I'm sorry for you, for those whose footsteps you followed, for those who followed your footsteps, and for those who will inevitably do so despite our efforts. I am sorry that you had to experience that kind of debilitating pain. Pressure. Unrelenting anxiety. I am sorry that, for whatever reason(s), your closest family and friends were unable to penetrate the glass bubble into which you sank by yourself. I'm so, so sorry that we couldn't save you.

I am sorry that you weren't able to recognize the way your presence made the lives of those around you better. I'm sorry that we weren't able to alleviate the afflictions that were consuming you, or at least lessen them to the point of treatment. I'm sorry that I wasn't more available to you. I know I was far down the line of people who may have been able to to intervene in those last few hours, but I hope you know that none of us are better off with you gone, and would have shouted that through the mountains if we thought it would've saved you. You were beautiful, and you still are, now as a guardian over those of us still here.

I do miss you. I miss going to your house, laughing over the trivial things that comprise the life of middle-schoolers: the who's-dating-who, when the next school-wide event would be [& what we'd wear to said event], and what rubber band colors we'd choose the next time we had adjustments with our orthodontists. I miss phasing through those awkward years when our bodies and minds were transitioning from children to young women: When we stepped into high school for the first time. When we thought our high school boyfriends might.. just.. be the ONE for forever and ever after. When we graduated. When, 4 years after that, we graduated college in different states. When we talked infrequently via phone, but still enough to know that the other was still excited to stay connected. When we finally made plans that never happened.

It's been five years.

Here's what's happened since then, as it relates to what I learned from losing you. From scratching my plans and taking days off from work to come home for your memorial service and funeral, I've learned. From holding myself together as your parents and brothers stumbled through those things at a loss of words and surprised that they still had tears left to cry - at the risk of disrespecting their pain... I've grown.

Here is what happened:

On that day, and for the immediate weeks and months following: I grieved. I comforted and was comforted by our friends and your family. I teetered back and forth between the sting of knowing you and little Braylon were gone, and the unavoidable mixture of betrayal and guilt, knowing that I had spoken with you just a mere four days prior to this, and somehow didn't detect a thing. I struggled to see through your absence into the bigger picture. I struggled a lot with those selfish emotions, before I could even begin to understand reality:

It wasn't YOU, my FRIEND who made that choice, but the disease that is depression, anxiety, mental abuse.. that pushed you to that point.

I left Mount Vernon and returned to my life in Cincinnati, entrenched in the idea that this should never happen. I researched for almost a full week on ways to get involved, and finally enlisted myself as a Field Advocate for the AFSP [American Foundation for Suicide Prevention]. I had three phone interviews with three different levels of local representatives, and learned a number of ways to make local, tangible contributions to the mission of edification and reach into those dark corners that you must have seen first hand. I wrote a couple of articles as a contributor on AFSP forums for suicide survivors: I was honest and raw about my ignorance to your struggle. I was bold in my call to action, which may or may not have reached anyone at all, even though I hope it did.

I've added to my ability to cope with disappointment, anger, fear and loss. I gained a new layer of understanding for the grieving process, and how to be a real shoulder to others in my life who would come to me in times of brokenness. You serve as a constant reminder and motivator to pour myself into each of my friendships and relationships - even those that have grown apart just by the course of life. I strive to stay connected and make the extra effort, sometimes when it's inconvenient, because I believe those who care for me would do the same. I try harder to love: openly and honestly, without judgment. I try to listen more. I try to instill in my daughter these principles, and the drive to show compassion - always - to everyone. I won't be able to shield her from the harsh realities and heartbreak that come as an essential part of growing, but if I can prepare her heart and mind to be a light in a dark world, perhaps one day she'll save someone in her own life who is on the edge of giving up. On the inside, I made a promise to you to seek help when I am overwhelmed. I'm not good at being emotionally-expressive, but I am not indestructible, as much as I force myself to be at times. I'm reminded that it's okay to be vulnerable.

It's my hope. I'm not perfect and I fail often at doing those things, but I know better than to look the other way.
******

It's five years later and I am still a Field Advocate for AFSP. I still try to partner with them when possible. I think of you every single time. I hope you know that you taught me a valuable lesson: Think. Act. Listen. Love.

In the active form, TALL:
Thinking, Acting, Listening. Loving.
Thinker. Action-taker. Listener. Lover.
♥.
Thank you Jena, for the impact you had on my life as a friend while you were here.
And now, thank you for serving as the mascot for me whenever I start to forget the importance of being TALL.

You're on a lot of hearts & minds today. Smile back at us, ok?

Love you, dear friend.

A Simple Note:

I could go on a diatribe and then some on how we should be celebrating our past, present and future military men & women today, but I'm a firm believer that we should be doing that every day... and so I'll just suffice to say this:

From my family to you and yours:

THANK YOU.

Yoga + Sushi = Monday

First, THIS:
clinomaniac. raise on up, cori's hand....
^ On. The. DAILY. Haha ;)

So.. Rob and I determined today that we have something of a tradition in the making. It's so clichè, I know, but it's becoming one of our things to do now:

Mondays when we don't have Sydni have seemingly consisted of work, yoga... and sushi.

1.
modo.
2.
mango tree.
And that's a fact, Jack! ;)

I'm a lucky girl to have this guy.
Date night > Blog Night.
