Faaariiiiidayyyy

I woke up to this gem:
who messes up the ymca? we do.
I can't tell ya'll how excited I am for Mare & Derrick's wedding, and the dancing that shall ensue when Becky and I get to hit the floor in celebration. A few of my favorite people are getting married this year, so don't worry - plenty of opps to catch us cuttin' up rugs ;).

In other news, today was gorgeous!
sunshine = happy people!
^ Okay, while that's not always the absolute equation, it happened to be true today. We've spent so many days gridlocked in a pattern of clouds and sleet and rain and more clouds and just gray gray grayyyyyy... when the sun came out today and the air didn't feel like freezing needles, the universal affect it had was an improved mood both in and out of the office.

Aaaaaand.. Timehop gave me a flashback to something I'd flashbacked five years ago (do the math, this picture is obviously older than 5yrs), but I love it just the same now as I did then, so it bears sharing:
more than 5 years ago, but still today!
To celebrate the weekend, I promised Syd a mama-mini date, so the two of us headed off after work for a fun night of Funko shopping, decorating and dinner. I am one lucky girl to have this kiddo in tow. She's my favorite little ham...

We headed home and knocked out the spare bedroom, which previously had been used for Sydni making sheet forts and chasing the dogs around:

before & after
(look how adulty!)
^ You guys, I'm doing domestic things like using matching bedsets and eating meals in actual compliance with the Whole30.

Please send help. ;)

Or at least give me the weekend. I'll take that, for now ♥
TGIF!

'Tis the Season to Be GENEROUS

She finally got me.
Sydni the germ-buster brought her sniffles home on Monday this week, and somehow I didn't contract anything until today. Fortunately, we were able to get out of the house for a few short hours to take care of some shopping:

1. Christmas Tree Lights
round lights!
We don't have them all up yet [we didn't buy enough strands; go figure], but this year, we decided to go with round Christmas lights, as opposed to the traditional slender strands. At this point, only half the tree is lit, but that half sure is beautiful ;)

2. Christmas for SOMEONE ELSE.
♥& be merry about it, too!
We are called to GIVE!
"Give generously to them and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the LORD your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to." - Dt 15:10 NIV
Anyone out there who's ever been to a church around Christmas time has probably seen some version of this practice: You draw or pick a name of a child, and with that comes your commitment to provide for that child [or children] gifts appropriate to their age, gender, needs and possibly wants. Our church is of course participating, and it was our pleasure to choose a name and give Sydni a reinforcing experience of giving generously to someone she doesn't even know.

Sidenote: Parents, if you and your kids have never participated in this, I would strongly encourage you to do it. Not only does this give you and your family something you could do as a team, it is a teachable moment built to easily give us a platform to lead by example in giving generously AND joyfully to those in need. In our case, we reminded Sydni that not every little girl and boy has a family like ours and sometimes the only gifts they may receive could be the ones we choose.

And JUST LIKE THAT, my 5-year-old's response gives me as the PARENT a very obvious and very BOLD reminder:
Give not JUST joyfully, but give nothing but what would be fit for a queen [or king!].
Whoa.Right?! Because it would've been easy for us to pick out some random, maybe even knock-off versions of what was listed on her little slip: clothes, princess items, baby dolls. We could easily have finished our "obligatory" shopping for this 2-year-old girl in a matter of minutes, but Sydni proved a reminder to us that this little girl deserved the best:
"Oh, MOMMY! I know what we should get her!! Let's get her................."
And just like that, she started spouting off lists of things she would enjoy. And I realized that, although we weren't planning on the cheapest way out for this little girl, I had not actively been approaching this as though I was buying for my own child. I would want the prettiest doll, most fun little game, fuzziest PJ's and functional clothes that would keep her warm. And so for the little girl being assisted by my family and me this year, that's what we did. ♥
#truth!
3. Christmas Decorations & Of Course... Knitting

The last thing on our agenda today was some comfy family time at the house. Sydni and I perused some Pinterest ideas for fun Christmas decorations. I had to laugh, because of all the crafty, more "kid-friendly" ideas floating out there on the interweb, Sydni has adamantly chosen mock faberge painted eggs. In this case, Sharpie'd faberge eggs. But still. Thanks, kiddo.. haha. Leave it to her to pick one of the most delicate projects on the entire site ;)
thanks, pinterest!
Although, I've gotta hand it to her - they are gorgeous!
Maybe next year. For now, it's back to these [knitting] needles; these scarves aren't gonna finish themselves! ;)

DIY Tutorial : Nail & String Home Décor

Hi, blogbots! [I mean that in a most endearing way]

I, along with a lot of you, occasionally troll Pinterest. When I do, it's usually to re-pin copious amounts of mouthwatering recipes or a rustic living room built into the side of a mountain itself.. and everything in between. Every once in a while, I manage to download an idea off the web and actually do it. This was one of those times.

So I thought I'd share. I'm not much of a tutorial kinda girl, but I'll do my best.

So you've decided you want to do string/nail art, and have managed to sort through the bajillion examples on Pinterest. You've even managed to select your specific design, color schemes and boards. We'll start with the basics:

*****
Here we go. Nail & String Art, the unofficially official tutorial, by yours truly.

SUPPLIES:
- A BASE. Decide what kind of base you want to use. Your options here are nearly limitless, just make sure you don't choose something too thin [or you'll have nails poking out on the other side], too pliable [ply wood for example would be a bad choice] or too soft [like, foamboard or something]. Really, I'd recommend solid wood. I bought some plain craft plaques at Michael's for a couple bucks each. They even had beveled edges already, so aesthetically I was off to a good start.
- PAINT. If you want a solid color, I would recommend a primer. I didn't use one because I wanted some of the woodgrain to show, but that's up to you. I also used an aerosol paint because the project was so small.
- NAILS. Keep in mind I've only done this ONE time now, so do some research on the right nails based on the size and intensity of your project. I found 5/8" wire nails at the hardware store and they worked just fine. Make sure you buy enough (:
- STRING. Another Michael's purchase.  I used Aunt Lydia's Crochet Thread [size 10]; it's thin and coarse enough to not unravel, but soft enough to maneuver.
- HAMMER. You will need this.

HOW-I-DID-THIS:
*This is just how I did this. If you like the way these turned out, feel free to follow along! If you know you'd like to adapt it to your own liking, well... that is what I love about crafts. We can do whatever we want! I hope this is at least helpful!*

1 | Paint the bases. I chose a brick red color, because it matches the rest of our living room. I also used aerosol. Be smart, and use a well-ventilated area.
spray paint.
4 coats, each dried in about 5 minutes
2 | Cut out your designs. For ours, I used an online font generator and chose the letters I needed, then chose 6 or 7 different font styles. You can search for the letters and state outlines anywhere on the web and hopefully find what you need.
snip.. snip snip snip (:
3 | Grab your hammer! Prepare yourself to drive tiny nails into boards about nine thousand times. I used iiiiitty bitty pieces of scotch tape to hold the design down, but I would probably recommend painters tape if you're using any sort of gloss or matte medium, so to not peel off any of your paint.

here... we.. go.
I wouldn't drive the nails in further than a few good smacks. If they're a little uneven, you can always level them out when you've got them all in. Nail around the outline of whatever shape you're using. For tiny details, I would recommend exaggerating just a little bit; it might look silly at first but will compensate when you start working with the string.
nails nails nails.
4 | Peel up your paper. Use your fingers, pliers, the hammer, whatever.. to gently fidget around any nails that went in a little crooked or are wobbly when you take the paper up.
paper.... no paper.
I realized immediately that my letter C looked more like a shriveled lima bean than a letter, which taught me that I should've made the letter a bit bigger. [You'll notice on the 2nd state I did, the letter is more pronounced.]

5 | String It Up. This was, for me, the easiest part of it, and a bit therapeutic if I'm being honest. A hint I realized after I finished the first state: To get an evenly-distributed look of the strings, count how many nails go around the outline. Then divide that by the number of nails of the smaller, inner outline. That will give you approximately how many times you'll have to use each inner nail for loops around the outer nails. For example, if you used 85 nails around the large outline, and 20 around the small outline, then you would need to use each inner nail about 4 to 5 times. (85 divided by 20 = 4.25). Once you get all the way around, tie a knot off on the original starting nail.
I'm one of those people who firmly believes in singeing edges. I've been doing it to shoelaces, hoodie ties and random strings for years. Since this string doesn't have any waxy component, just be sure to cut off enough to give some slack and don't burn it too close. Otherwise, your knot will come loose and good luck getting that back together without re-doing the whole thing.
playing with fire... be careful!
ta.... da!!!
^ (You'll notice there's a small gap in the strings around the top of the C; this is from my not counting out how many times I would have to use each nail... rookie mistake. Woops.

6 | Rinse & Repeat! I went ahead and did the rest of my letters, the other state [Illinois] and spared myself from taking pictures of every single one of those, too. It's basically the same process over and over again.
paper.. and nails.. and string.. (:
My apologies in advance for the grainy quality of these pictures; I promise I'll get better ones here soon. Anyway, this is what the finished products looked like: strung up & hung up!
♥!
If you have any questions, please ask! Like I said, this was a learning experience for me, too... so if you have any tips or tricks to share, I'm open to those, too (: This was a fun little project, and perhaps with bigger nails in a more simple design, thicker string [maybe elastic of some sort?], I'm sure the kiddos could have some fun with this too.

Happy crafting... & Happy SATURDAY!!

Things of a Home: Dog Baths & Leather Sofas

When I woke up today next to a big, furry cuddler with her nose in my hair, I realized something:

She smelled like a hamster. I love my dogs, but in the hustle and bustle of moving and everything that came with it, I couldn't remember the last time I gave them baths. It immediately went onto the agenda for this evening, and much to their dismay, it happened. They are clean.

And they were adorable while it happened. I exploited every second I could between soapy hands and the girls doing that whole-body shake that every wet dog does exactly when you don't want her to.
pre-bath...
... looking at me like, "wwwhaaaat did we do now?"
From there, they spent about 10 minutes each looking like sad, soapy little propane tanks on table legs as they took turns standing in the tub being jealous of the other who was just outside. We flipped a coin and Sasha landed first turn..
mawmmmm.. my nose is wet!
stella bella... looking so forlorn!
We somehow completed two baths without getting mom soaked with trying to shake the water out, and while I toweled off most of the excess, I knew I needn't worry about final drying. They are each other's detailers...
clean girls!
They just wanted answers after that. I may have had to do some light bragging with dog treats to coax them both into the bathroom, so I spent a few minutes afterwards on trial about my misleading them to a fake yummy food feast that was actually a scary, sudsy rainstorm.
sorry girls.
Luckily for me, our pups are forgiving souls, and in no time were back to romping around in the living room waiting for Rob to get home.

.. And when that happened... we did what every couple does after work on a Thursday: buy a couch.
before & after
before & after
The dogs of course, still jaded about their forced showers, made sure to photobomb our pictures, but they are more a part of our home than any couch will ever be, so I suppose it's fair. Rob on the other hand deserves an award for putting up with me tonight as we [more like I] fumbled our way around the house with the sections of the couch unloading it into our living room. The biggest disadvantage of Rob transferring to Cincinnati is for certain the absence of his friends. He misses them, of course, but on nights like this and a couple other instances thus far, it wouldn't have killed us to have a bit more brawn than I can offer to help move our stuff around. I've managed, sure.. but I'll just say I'm okay not doing this stuff for a living ;)

Eventful day, that's for sure.
Tomorrow's FRIDAY! [wootwoooot!] If I'm right, it's gonna be a pretty good day.

Let's see if I'm right (:

It's WINTER.

Ok, ok, ok. It's officially here.
I found this little cartoon online that usually sums up conversations about snow between people who have ever lived through a snowfall of any magnitude.

I work for some very generous people, who decided that in lieu of the worsening weather today, would let us head home early. I managed to snap some momentos of the Christmas tree in our office before we left; Nancy has worked fairly hard on it the past few days and even purchased three owl ornaments, signfying as she stated, the three wise owls of the office [Nikki, Elisa & myself]. We chuckled at how thoughtful it was..
merry {early} Christmas!
We were gone before the 1:00 hour hit; I'm glad, because the roads only slickened [word? who cares...] up as every hour passed into the afternoon.

By the time I got home, the snow was coming down in full force, and naturally that meant that all the people who probably shouldn't be out driving in less-than-favorable road conditions, were.

wonderful wonderland!
Rob and I made what was probably considered a brash, stupid decision to head out into the falling snow to do some Christmas shopping. Why? Because I'm making many if not all of my Christmas gifts this year, and I wanted to start on them... today. I'm an impulse person like that, and luckily for me, so is Rob. We waged war against the slick roads, navigated around fender benders and made our way safely into Hyde Park, where we hit Michael's, Walgreens, the hardware store and the Mexican restaurant all in one swipe.

[& that folks, is how it's done in the midwest...]

So now we're back, and as muuuuuuch as I would love to show you some spoilers of what I've already accomplished, I .. just... can't [because giftee eyes just might see...]! Believe me, it hurts. I love.love.LOVE.. DIY Christmas things, so of course I want to share [not because mine are that awesome, but because I took stabs at several Pinterest-inspired projects and they did not come out resembling distorted lab creations, woo!]... but I suppose that time will come.

We're cozying up with the pups now and ready to relax for the night!

& I Did NOTHING Today

and it was amazing.

Okay, I might be lying a little. I didn't compleeeetely waste the day; I got some cleaning done and started scouting for a pub-style kitchen table. I didn't have much success in that regard today, but I've got some ideas.

In the interest of continuing the transformation of my little home, I made a trip to Marshall's and picked up two storage bins for a decorative yet functional project I've been doing at the house.
my mission for the day.... haha

I succeeded in getting everything done that I'd planned for the day, what little there really was, at my own leisure. It was fantastic. I had so much extra time at my disposal that I got myself wrapped up into laughing over some first world problems with practical solutions that a friend shared via the fabuloso world-a wide-a webbbbb....

What do you think about those? I don't know that I'd go so far as to line my toilet seat with tube socks, but hey, to each his own.. haha. I do think some of the other ideas are pretty practical, and might even try them one of these days. [Sure... reality says I'll probably add that to a wish-list of actions along withy my bajillion Pinterest ideas, but whatev...]

Anywho, I'm not doin' a single thing tonight and uhhh, that's the way, UH HUH, UH HUH... I liiiike it!

Who says these weekends always have to be chaotic?? ;)

Well Isn't That Somethin'

I discovered popcorn chips this week.

Let me repeat that:

I discovered POPCORN... CHIPS.... this week.

these things. hello, new addiction.
I partially blame this on Elisa for introducing me to these things late last week. I was on a mission to find some salad dressing just around the corner at Kroger, and I happened down the chip aisle. I snagged a box of these things, and while I liked the variety Elisa had better, these are still delicious and I thiiiiink... I'm hooked. Dangit! I already told Ali about these [we share an affinity for popcorn], and advised her not to judge me if she shows up next weekend and the house is full of these things. Haha.

Anyway, that was a tiny highlight of the day [it doesn't take much for me, seriously]. I'd prayed that the rain would hold off long enough to get a quick paddle in with Becky. That didn't happen; instead it stormed all afternoon and well into the evening. Since her and I are always so great at making actual plans [< that's a lie], we decided that I would just head her way and we would go from there.
who knew....
Insert also, that I finally broke down and made a pitstop at Home Depot to pick up some shelf supports. I've so desperately needed these tiny little things to get the rest of my shelves up; the original pegs are still packed away, I'm thinking likely in a box somewhere still at Rob's house. Either way, I never thought such a big part of what I had left to do would be contingent on something so small, but I reached another milestone in putting my place together with them.

Anyway, Becky and I did dinner at the Thai Cafe down in Ludlow, then retreated from the rain back to her place to hang out for a little while before I headed home.
pad thai (:
It. Is. ALMOST. Friday.

Tomorrow I'll see Kim for the first time in..... well, it's been a while. If it's not raining, I'll get this lawn mowed, too. Haha. We'll see.

Oh HAAAA... HAAA. :P

It's funny how, even though I'm technically settled now, things are still spinning. It's always busy [I'm not complaining], so it seems like there's never a dull moment.

In the midst of the chaos, I nearly had a mini stroke from a conversation over text with Becky earlier today:

turd. haha..
Suuure, I would've been thrilled for her and any new job opportunity, but I seriously would've faced much dismay had she been serious. This all stemmed from the earlier messages of my asking what her evening plans were, and her telling me, "farewell dinner." As it turned out, it was a dinner for someone else; she and I are river-bound tomorrow and I will guarantee you we'll both have at least one welt each for me punching her and her returning the gesture. [P.S. - she's not leaving.] Don't DO these things to me! hahaha...

To combat any leftover doubt I may have had from earlier in the day, I planned a solo mission to IKEA after work. This could've gone either way: me either getting exactly what I needed and not a thing more, or me being lured into the jungle with nobody to help me.

Got news for ya: I made it out alive! [I know you were all concerned.. haha.. just kidding...] Seriously though, I intended to pick up a cheap coffee table to replace the one I have now. There's not enough space for the table I already had, so I was on a mission to find something smaller. The glass top table now has a home [along with the owl lamp, thanks Mom :)] on top of the otherwise unused ledge that protudes into the living room.

.. and don't ask me how i got that sucker up there... it wasn't pretty.. haha..
And...

thanks again, ikea (:
Oh yeah, I got a cute little rug for under the table, too.. all for under $40, and less than 20 minutes to assemble [gotta love particle board]. This place is coming together one stitch at a time, and I can't complain one bit. This is gonna be a good little place for me; I can tell.

Sooo....
Kalyn moves back this weekend.. & Keifer too!
Rob's visiting [still tentative, but I'm really hoping!] this weekend.
Becky & I [& maybe Mike, too?] are kayaking tomorrow.
Trish is lending me her lawn mower to take care of this mess out front.
Ali is visiting in 2 weeks.
Brittany's housewarming party is in 3 weeks.
Heidi just sent me another picture of my family from this past weekend.
Julie just sent me a mega-encouraging message to help uplift & motivate me (:
Jamie just sent me pictures of the mountains in Kurdistan.
Kim & I are hanging out on Thursday.
Catie & I are scheduling a date when she gets back from Chi.
GOD is GOOD.. ALL the time... & ALL the time, GOD... IS.. GOOD.

....Look at all these incredible people in my life! How could I not feel blessed?!

Tomorrow's midweek.
See you then!

It Will Be Okay (:

This whole journey on which I've been for the past year or so now is starting to come full circle. I looked back on some of the entries I wrote towards the middle to end of last year and saw myself then: scared, angry, confused, hurt, in denial, broken..... but more importantly unsure anymore of who I was, doubting my own worth and ability because of it all. I had crumbled, and was starting to pick up the pieces and put them back together. I knew I had a long road ahead of me, with some pretty daunting tasks to accomplish in a short amount of time.
My sister told me in a conversation the other day that through it all, she'd been angry with me: angry for me shutting down, for me not going to her or our parents when we both knew I needed them, but mainly... because she saw me giving up who I was, standing down instead of standing up for myself, and letting someone else dictate my life in a way that was unhealthy from the start. I had become a person that anyone from "pre-2008" would've scoffed at; they wouldn't have believed it was me if I'd told them. I was numb, broken and bitter. I limited my company to a few select individuals, and shut the rest of the world off.

Not. Who. I. Am.
And then....
and this is who i am. we're getting back to that.
I took a dive, head first, didn't drown, and although then I felt like I was alone, I knew deep down that I never was, and I never will be. Things slowly started working themselves into place, both with and against the grain of what I would've liked. I owe everything to some select people, without whom I honestly don't know what I would've done. Among the many who extended themselves to me in the process of getting back: Becky, Mike and Rob proved to be pillars I sincerely couldn't have gone without. I knew then, even in the phase of vagabond status I held for nearly a month, that wherever I landed, things would be okay.

Today marked the end of a weekend: as short as it was and as quickly as it passed, it was sort of the culminating point I'd subconsciously needed more than I could've imagined. My parents have been here for the past two days, and I quickly realized the power of falling back into the arms of family, and the impact that can have on the heart, even in just one weekend. My family is comprised of people who are not related by blood, and have had our battles together, but as I watched my parents leave today, I felt renewed by the entire experience, and I know without doubt that YES, IT WILL BE OKAY.

To save you all from any more of my sappy rants, I'll give you some more menial things, like the fact that my college-esque living room took another step towards adulthood today! Haha. Really, though, Mom & I went out this morning while Dad spent time with Sydni. We hit up a few different stores for miscellaneous things before digging into the real mission: find curtains for the front room. They'd brought me two bamboo blinds from their house, and by the time it was all said and done, we'd found fashionable coverings for the front windows and for Sydni's room. We even hung a clothesline in the back. All around a success!
improvement, yeah? ;)
It was another great day with my family, and I was sad to see them go.
To soften the slight sadness I had about bidding them off, I have this to look forward to:
she's here!!!!! i can't wait. i... can't... wait. (:
Yeah, my best friend is moving back to Ohio, and she's in town doing prep work for it for the next few days. Exciiiiiiiiiiited!!

The last thing I had to share for today: The pictures of the meatballs [aka Sasha & Stella] that Rob sent me. I really miss them both, in all of their rowdiness. Stella still looks like a bat on steroids and Sasha, well... Sasha's still Sasha. Haha. There isn't much to say there, but either way, it was great to see pics of the pups (:
meatballs! [miss them....]
Good night, blogbots. I hope you had a great weekend... here's to a great WEEK ahead!

Starting to Look Like Home (:

Day 3: This place is starting to look much more like an actual residence than a storage unit. [Yay!] This is progress!

I took a trip to Walgreens during lunch to do a mass printing of photographs I wanted to frame. There were about 20 all together; I was bound and determined to update all of the frames I have and get those suckers on the wall. I'm guilty of having outdated or empty frames lying around for months on end, so I had it at the high end of my to-do list to get this done.

Funny, how I think some things are urgent, and then I'm reminded that people, not things, are way more important, and there's always time for good friends. I got a phone call from Becky, as I was nearly cross-eyed with an exacto-knife shaving down some photo edges.

Here's how that went:
B: "Hey lady, how's the dryer?"
C: "No issues so far?" B: "Great. How's your stomach?"
C: "Empty..." B: "How's your front door??"
C: "Unlocked."

I love my friends. This is what I saw not even 15 seconds later...

my friends are awesome.
Becky? check. Mike? check.
CINDER BLOCKS?? check!
.... DINNER FROM ELI'S??!
cheeeeeeckk......

What an amazing surprise. The two cinder blocks I still needed for the basement, carry-out from Eli's BBQ, and two really stellar people for dinner company. It certainly beats the vibe from last night at WG, but who's keeping score.... haha.

I've been a busy bee this evening. I forgot to mention that I did my first full grocery trip earlier this afternoon. I'd forgotten how un-fun it is having to buy all that staple stuff [paper towels, dish soap, TP, etc.], but somehow managed to remember everything and get home in one piece. I've cleaned the bathroom and tidied some more around the living room.

first grocery shop... done!
OH! And the pictures are hung. Most of them, at least. There are some frames still unaccounted for, which baffled me until I remembered that they're still at Rob's. In time...

PHOTO MONTAGE TIME! [Before + After!]

[still missing bookcase shelves :/ ... ]
I've been a busy bee tonight. Huge thanks again to Becky & Mike for being who they are and for helping out in ways I couldn't even have thought to ask. I'm feeling more settled in the new digs every day, with only about four days really under my belt here.

Oh, and the countdown to Rob visiting continues: 2. more. days.
