[Measuring] Success

Ya know...
In the shadow of all the things I've seen, read & heard in the wake of this insane weekend in Orlando (namely the varied responses of the general public), I saw this today & thought, "Yes. This is a good summation of how I right now."

I can't begin to imagine the hellish voids to which the families of those 50 people (& of Christina Grimmie) will wake for the next days.. weeks.. years, knowing what they know and missing those beloved who are gone. There's nothing any store sells that will restore a loss of this magnitude. The deceased shooters will never even be punished with the physical sight of the families they ripped apart.

Am I praying for Orlando? You better freakin' believe I am. Do I believe prayer alone will compensate for what happened? Of course I don't. Do I believe though in the power of American unity? Abso-150%yes-alutely. To me, that says success. A country divided so resolutely on political, religious, (etc.) issues that will put that aside immediately to pick up the pieces of a tragedy like this - TOGETHER. THAT is success. That's what I'll tell my daughter happened: when evil made a statement, people still loved, and love won.

And that's what I want her to tell her friends about the adults in her life, especially her mother. Nobody sets a flawless example, but if I can raise at least one child to be a light in this crumbling world, and to love herself and others exactly where they are, then yeah- that's success.

T-Rex Ninja!

I couldn't help but share this today.. mainly because as I push onward in the garish path that is marathon training [on purpose, I know... ], I could use some motivation.

And a good laugh. Ali, there is still hope for us!

Oh, and just because I went to high school with Amber, I thought I'd share this because seriously, her journey is incredible, and I'm proud of her for her commitment to this. This was a while back, but it was certainly under-celebrated. Now, if only I could dig up some archives of us singing together back at Chapel Hill.. haha..

Kacy Catanzaro may be getting much of the ANW glory [& rightly so, don't get me wrong!], it's the everyday people like Amber that really tug at the heartstrings for me.

Anyway, I hope that inspires some of ya'll out there!

An Easy Little Sunday

I woke up today in a tent, in my little sleeping bag, next to my two favorites:
these two ♥
It was a beautiful morning, and we took it in stride, leisurely with  hearts full after the night camping out. We took our sweet time tearing down; with a nod, a 'see-ya-next-time,' and a super-helpful little girl helping tote our campsite out to the truck to pack up.
the best helper out there!
We stopped at the house to drop off boat, gear and extra weight, then continued on out to Plain Folk Cafe for breakfast. Between the pancakes and hashbrowns, there were plenty of giggles and cheesy peace signs from this girl who's really just no so... little anymore.

This is what I mean...

It's crazy how gratifying it is sometimes to just ... relax for a day. It was the perfect cap to a beautiful weekend, and I'm one happy gal to have spent it with some great friends, my better half and my mini me. Not bad at all!

Now baaaa-ring on the week!

T-Minus FOUR MONTHS: The Bridal Gals

Ya'll..... we're down to FOUR MONTHS on the dot. Whoaaa!
#tribe!

I thought it appropriate for the four-month countdown marker to take a brief second and introduce ya'll to the ladies who'll be by my side in October when Rob and I tie the knot. This isn't relevant info for a lot of you, I know, but I'm proud to call these women part of my tribe, so it's a credit-where-due thing.. just bear with me!

Drum rollllllll...
Ladies & Gentlemen... My TRIBE!

Maricor | Matron of Honor
If you have one of those friends that can make you laugh over something just by making eye contact, then you'll get [for the most part] the relationship I have with Maricor. Oh, and she's my cousin, so there's that, too. She's one of my first and oldest friends, and she compliments me in the areas where I fall short. Sometimes I look back on our lives together and apart - we've never managed to live in the same city for more than 6 months, I laugh at how long it took me to realize that she led a parallel life oftentimes to mine so that I would have someone to lean on to justify or reason through whatever emotions, joy, doubt and fear I may've had along the way. There's not a single life milestone that seems to go by without sharing it with her, and I'm not about to start now! Cousin, best friend, makeup artist extraordinaire. The list goes on and on, but in October, she'll be my matron of honor and I'm so proud to have her up there.

Becky | Maid of Honor
This woman's had my back since I was a freshman in college, and she hasn't stopped since. There are role models and good examples, and then there's Becky. It's rare to say that a single person has legitimately, literally saved your life, but I can say that about her, and to this day I will owe her more that I'd ever be able to express in a single blog entry. She was a guardian angel for me through the unusual college experience I had, and hasn't stopped being there for me since then. We've shared plenty of laughter, an equal amount of tears and heartache and a mutual love for prayer and of the great wide wilderness to heal and rehabilitate the soul afterwards. From long talks as we hiked our way over miles of the Appalachian Trail, to the backyard camping outings at your parents', I am not the same person I was before, but a much better one after. I owe her so much more than a spot in my bridal party, but for now, I hope she'll make do with Matron of Honor.

Heidi | Bridesmaid
What's better than being adopted? Having a sister who's also adopted! One of the things that weighs often on the psyche of adopted kids is that gray what if? area that hasn't and won't ever be answered about what our alternative life would've been like if we'our home countries, families, cultures had been all we'd ever known. Biologically, I was born into a family of double digit sibling count; as an adopted child, I was raised an only child. There was always a subtle ache that couldn't be quite thoroughly appeased... until Heidi. She is more my sister than I could imagine anyone being, from the way we think, to the way we agree on nail polish colors and how to hand wash dishes. She amazes me with her youthful, carefree but discerning approach to life that I often envy, and am constantly impressed at how she embraces the simplest beauty around her. To top it off, she's raised 3 children to adulthood without strangling any of them [or herself], and I am just.. taking notes for the future ;) I love you, sister, and I am honored to have you up there with me!

Marianne | Bridesmaid
Yes, I was a tomboy growing up. I had my dolls, yes, and my dresses and my sparkly nail polish. What I also had was a neighborhood and family brimming with boys and boy things, from dirt and worms to battle-scarred action figures, Barbies missing hair & limbs, every Nerf toy created in the 90's and a healthy track record of scrapes, bruises and unexplained grass stains. I envied the girls who had lots of other girl friends, and awhile I had a few good ones throughout high school, I really never got it when it came to girls and their tribes. Marianne is most definitely part of my tribe. I've learned so much in the short 4+ years now that I've known  her, about overcoming adversity as a woman, recovering from the deep, dark emotional wounds as a human, and relentlessly pursuing your life's dreams in the way of someone you'd want your children looking up to. Whether it's that 8th cup of coffee we're both on, or a 10-mile hike through the woods with only our cameras making conversation, she's helped me grow as a person and realize that I am enough for exactly who I am and who I am not. Bridesmaid? I think so!

Kalyn | Bridesmaid
There's a chapter of my life that many of you already know is very much closed in many ways, and I have no interest in revisiting it. Though it's a season of my life well-respected for the hard-fought lessons I learned as a result, there were some absolute trophies I gained from it. Sydni, of course being the biggest, but a friendship forged that I've treasured since the day it started. Kalyn is the free spirit, fiercely devoted sister/daughter to her family, creative genius and fun-loving center of attention that never fails to unite the like-minded for a good time. We laugh a lot over the happenings, the drama, the irony and mostly the characters in that closed chapter [yeah, it's closed for both of us.. haha], but looking back at it, again, I know the road back to finding myself would've been a lot harder without her. She's an adventurer, so much like the other phenomenal women I'm proud to call my tribe; she loves the outdoors, can climb anything in the gorge & beyond, and will be there when you need her. This may not be our cross-country road trip from Ohio to Phoenix, but it'll be a party on its own in October & I'm super pumped to have her as a bridesmaid!

Brittany | Bridesmaid
Not only is she Kalyn's sister, she's one of my favorite women! It seems some days like it's been ages since her wedding, when I was honored to stand with her and Wayne as they exchanged vows. Other days it feels like it was just last weekend! I don't see this gal nearly as much as I wish I could, but that's only because she's four states away making big moves and showing South Carolina what a woman in charge can bring to the office! She's paving her career and chasing her dreams as a successful business woman, wife and southern belle! I love Brittany because she's that perfect mixture of someone who remembers her roots and embraces everything new that comes her way. She was the girl who came back from a shattered wrist and provided me encouragement and humor while I recovered from a shattered collarbone. She's the witty, sassy, organized friend that every girl needs and wants, but is rarely fortunate enough to have. It was a true blessing and a terrific time being a part of her wedding party, and I can't wait to have her as part of mine as a bridesmaid!

Ali | Bridesmaid
Oh goshhh.. Last, but far from being least! Ali is my favorite Ginger, for reasons that far exceed the obvious fact that she is in fact a redhead. I met Ali through work, and the rest is history. I'm a firm believer that the people in our lives are put there for one of three distinct reasons: to teach us something, to become a permanent part of our lives, or to introduce us to things and/or other people that then become permanent fixtures. Ali is all three of those. She has a heart on fire for Christ; the strength and resolve of her faith and hope are admirable, and for that alone I have an enormous amount of respect for her. As a friend, she's been miles away from me for a couple of years now, but never further than a text or a phone call. She's candid, honest and tells me what I need to hear in instances where most people would just slide by telling me what I want to hear. We've built an impressive foundation in the short time I've known her [what, like going on 5 years now?], but I couldn't imagine life without, and that's precisely why I couldn't imagine this life moment without her.

Maricor, my cousin.
Becky, my advisor.
Heidi, my sister.
Marianne, my soul sister.
Kalyn, my fellow wanderluster.
Brittany, my professional goal.
Ali, my ginger counterpart!

Assembling the ideal troop of equally-bizarre, quirky and absolutely wonderful in their own individual ways women was an easier concept to imagine than to execute for me -- or so I thought. Now that I'm here, staring down the last 4 months of pre-wedding everything, I can't envision doing this without these women and the rest of the our family and friends who've supported us so far and so much. These ladies are incredibly dear to my heart, and while they're not the only ones I would coin as such, I am truly and immeasurably grateful that they will be standing by me in October. ♥

Four. Months. To. Go.
Whoa.

Barking Kids & Tied-Up Friendlies

I'll tell ya what.. this girl.... haha..
Kids are awesome. Seriously. Funny, weird, messy... and awesome. Mine is no exception.
Today was a pretty good day, all things considered, and hanging out with my mini first thing after work is like the icing on a cake. Seriously. She's hilarious. And although I find it inconveniencing at times whenever we're anywhere and we have to stop for a 1-minute ride atop Sandy the Meijer horse, I have to stop and remind myself that these little moments won't last forever, and the world is big enough for me to relax and allow her to have them.
sandy the meijer horse!
In other news, the USWNT ladies took on Japan tonight, and although I'm not sure how I stayed awake through the entire game, I did it, despite the dismay of ending with a tied 3-3 match. Ladies, we're cheering you on from Cincinnati, and you blogbots will be seeing plenty of weigh in here on their Road to Rio as we get going. Oh, and sidenote: SUPERIOR PLAY, EQUAL PAY. 'Nuff said ♥.

An uneventful Thursday, really, I know.. but hey, it was what it was and tomorrow is Friday and YAY. :)

See you then!

Like Nehemiah :)

Happy Wednesday, bloggers!

I hope the week's gone well for all of you, even if it's one of the abbreviated work weeks like mine has been. It's certainly been a roller coaster week for us, but there've been more highs than lows, and for that I'm grateful.

Tonight after work, we were able to convene with our small group and transfer guardianship of the two boxes for the foster graduates. I'm excited to hear how they're received.

Something that we covered tonight in small group that resonated with me; bear with me - this isn't long, I promise, but it's certainly worth the recall on a later day, I'm sure.

Scott walked us through the book of Nehemiah tonight, focusing primarily on Nehemiah himself, and the qualities that defined him as the leader, prayer-warrior and consistently faithful person he was. We centered our study tonight around Nehemiah's journey to Jerusalem to rebuild the broken walls and restore the inner city.

I can't imagine. Seriously.
The journey there, in a time where Uber, Mapquest and anything faster than a horse or camel didn't exist. We're talking miles.. and miles.. and miles of walking.
Then there was the matter of obtaining all the things he'd requested from King Artaxerxes: letters ahead of him requesting protection. A calvary of bodyguards. Timber & material to rebuild the walls and gates. Other people to go along and help. Things requested from a king during a time in which you could very literally lose your head if the King felt slighted or upset with you for any reason. Talk about confidence!

We dissected Nehemiah's experience through the 52 days it took to rebuild the walls around Jerusalem, and I realized that although the [literal] work itself is so very different, the principles of leadership, discernment, trust, confidence, faith, endurance, consistency and resistance are tried, true and timeless.

First and foremost, Nehemiah was a prayer warrior. That in itself is a step on which I fall short more often than I care to admit. Sure, I pray, but when I'm being honest, I can't say that it's always the first thing I think to do when I'm caught off guard. It's one of the first, but it's not the first.

Then, he's a leader by example and participation. You know, one of those working manager types. The coach that gets on the field and does the drills with the team. The teacher that gives the instruction and then provides individual attention until the whole class understands at the same level. Nehemiah was a tutor, trainer and humble servant, all wrapped up into one man, powered by God, purposed to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.

Love
Joy
Peace
Patience
Kindness
Goodness
Faithfulness
Gentleness
& Self-Control

[wait, those sound familiar.... ;) ]

Just some things I've been reflecting on since we left tonight. I am not the first person I would think of if asked who I knew that exhibits all of these boldly, daily, and because of that, I know I need to work on it.

For now, I wish joy and peace to each of you for the rest of the week!

Last Day of May

Ya'll, I have some serious joy in my heart today. There was also a little strife, but that came later, and not really at my expense.

For starters, I ordered this SHIRT back at the beginning of April, but never received it. I'd sent an email out to the company, with wavering expectations of hearing back. I was told that when the next batch of them came in, a replacement would be shipped.

Well...

This came toooodayyy! Yeyeyeyeh, I know I probably read too far into this, but hey - if there's anything I really love to do, it's give credit where it's most definitely due. I got the shirt, yes. That little blue card down there is a hand-penned note from Rikki at OhioExplored, explaining that the 8x10 print, decal stickers and gold engraved cuff are a complimentary apology for the delay.

CUSTOMER SERVICE, MUCH?! It's pretty daggone hard to really, really surprise me, but this one got me right in the feels. I hadn't asked for anything extra, and certainly wasn't expecting anything other than exactly what I'd originally purchased. I'm crazy impressed ya'll. If you're an Ohio junkie like me, you'd better take a moment to check out @OhioExplored, @RedGiraffeDesigns & @ChampaignPaper - all Ohio-based, and all awesome.

It made my day, seriously. Then, there was after work; I set off on the final leg of my adventure hunting down the items for both of the boxes for our small group's sponsorship in the Clermont County Foster program:
so excited!!
We'll deliver these two tomorrow night at small group, and they'll continue on to two of the seniors graduating both from high school and the Clermont County Foster program. I'm honored to be a part of this, and more so to be charged with the procurement of said items. Excited! :)

There was a quick dinner date with Rob, followed by an unscripted evening hosting one of my best friends for a sleepover. The evening took a turn for the unpleasant, but as with all things unfavorable, I'm a proponent of hopeful belief that this too shall pass.

I'm going to leave that right there, for anyone else who might need it today. I hope that wherever I've found you tonight, fellow blogger, that you've had someone remind you that you are worth exactly what you want, and you are worthy of being loved for all that you are and aren't. You are wonderful :).

Good night, for now - see you tomorrow ... In JUNE!
