20K, Birthdays, Syd the SWIMMER & Cegg!

Wwwwow.
Logged on to do today's entry and found this:

tweeeeeeeeenty thousand whaaaat?!
So uhmmm.. THANK YOU!! I don't write my blogs for the purpose of counting pageviews, so I'm just as surprised as you should be... haha. Thanks, if you're one of the eye-pairs who's visited, read, loved or hated, or found something to take away from any of my particular journey through this life, then just know it means a lot.

Something I remembered receiving, while I was in the process of physically relocating back to Ohio.. from a childhood friend of mine:

Like I said, I wasn't looking for sympathy, or really even an audience; I write a lot of my entries for my own recall later on.. but it meant a lot then and it still kinda floors me that this thing has been seen 20k times [& not by me!]. Thank you ♥

Anyway, on to some more important news: Today's birthdays include two amazing people I wouldn't DARE forget!

1 || RINIIIIIIIII
I met this girl when I was in 8th grade, at the ever-faithful Skyview Ranch camp, and we've been friends ever since. We clicked immediately through our similar tastes and affinity for hobbies that were, well.. lacking of glitter, glam & all that other crap that the majority of girls that year were after. I will find the pictures, but until I do, I'll just keep laughing at her and I sneaking off into the woods one year and seeing how many times we could shoot each other at a 6-foot point blank range with paintball guns before the other cried mercy. We were interrupted, so there wasn't a winner. I vote re-do!

then & now.. ♥ her!
& s'more:
3 of my favorite moments ever..

2 || JORDAN!
This guy has an insane amount of talent! I first met him sometime in 07? or 08? when his old band [Thoroughfare] was playing through and happened to be at Molly Malone's in Covington. After that, I made it a point to connect with this guy and his crew every time they came through Cincinnati.. and after all these years, he's still just as talented if not more than he was then! Happy BIRTHDAY!
2007 > 2009 > 2013! keep at it my talented friend.. happy birthday!
Birthdays are the best (:
Except.... in the case of toddler swim lessons.. Those.. might be the best today:

blowing bubbles
floating!
my little goggled mermaid ♥ ♥
Gosh.. it's insane how much I love this little girl (:
I am so proud of you, monster.

... And as if swim lessons weren't enough excitement for the night, Catie stopped out for dinner after we got home! Sydni made it a point to make her play doctor's office, which in spite of Andy's medical background, has apparently not transferred to Catie.. haha. ["Okayyy, now you get a shot in your forehead" - we were roooolling... hahaha]
oh yes. that's us.
All in good fun. I love her, and I love that we were able to hang out for some homecooked dinner & catching up. Win!

And on that note, I'll leave you with what I found just moments ago after I was finished doing dishes and went to find out why it was so quiet [you toddler parents know that's not usually a good sign, hah]:

my heart. my soul. my love. my daughter.
So to her, goodnight..
♥ ♥ ♥ ♡ ♥ ♥ ♥
&& to the rest of you, we'll pick this back up tomorrow (:

9/11 : The People

Disclosure:
THERE MAY BE IMAGES HERE THAT YOU DON'T CARE TO SEE. MY INTEREST IS NOT TO OFFEND, BUT TO PAY HOMAGE TO OUR PEOPLE FROM THAT DAY
.. ALL OF THEM.

It's been 12 years.
It goes without saying for most of us that we do remember exactly where we were when this happened. I know I do.

Here's a video, made by my cousin Jeremy. He is a veteran of our US Military, and with all the respect I have, I salute him and ALL of our service men and women [& their families]. Thank you, Jeremy, for putting this together.

*sorry there's no sound... there was an error getting the soundtrack on, but frankly, I think seeing this in silence is just as well.

I'll probably ask this question every year when this day comes around and we are faced with the task of remembering a day when we lost thousands of friends, family members, colleagues and members of rescue and aid forces. Forces barged in on us, costing us the lives of our people and throwing our country into a state of panic and war.

This will not be a political post.

In the past years, I've dwelled on the political side of the 9/11 aftermath, but today... my mind wanders to the people whose stories we might never hear.

My best friend's uncle works for the airlines. He lost one of his best friends that day, after he helped her get onto the flight that ended in Pennsylvania. The ripple of those directly affected that day started with every person aboard one of those four planes [coined P4]: American Airlines' Flights 11 & 77, United Flight 175 and United Airlines' Flight 93. Combined on those four flights, 232 people lost their lives on impact when the planes followed their forced courses.

images we'll never forget ..
On more than one occasion, I've worked with employees in the service industry. That's one facet of my job. Today I think of some of them - men and women who at times were my favorite employees due to their work ethic, attitudes and overall outlook on life. Their daily duties required many of them to maintain a distance from the hustle and bustle, or serve after business hours when the halls and conference rooms were quiet. I think of these people and of those like the who lost their lives in the attack and never had their stories shared. On that day, I have no doubt that many of them became a fleeing person, no different than the CEO at the opposite end of the company's ladder.

Then I think of the children. Over the past couple of years especially, I've noticed more coverage on the children left without one or both parents from that day. Many of the stories are focused on the children who are nearing their pre-teens now - boys and girls whose fathers were killed before they were born. Of course, not to discredit mothers, there are also the stories of children who as babies lost theirs that day. I've read articles on the bonds struck between many of those families, solely based off of that day. I'm saddened by the void in their lives that has become more 'manageable' over time, but certainly not any less obvious or painful. I'm encouraged though, by the stories of encouragement, community support and love that these families have given to each other over the past 12 years.

the "babies" of 9/11
For very obvious reasons, I gravitated too, towards the people who lost their lives that day.
If you're the average human, like me, the closest you've come to losing your life was probably a car accident, or perhaps something a little more serious or freakish. In those seconds, there is nothing to consider except our actions in the split seconds and moments to follow. For me, the nearest brush I had with losing my life was a serious car accident; I can assure you that I had no time then to consider what the rest of my life would or wouldn't hold, and who I would or wouldn't see ever again to tell about it.

That day was a different story. Of all the pictures I've ever seen from that day, this is among the top five that I hate the most. The people look so small against the landscape of that building, and I cannot see their faces, but my heart was crushed when I saw this. [photo from NatGeo; see others HERE]. These were people caught above the point of impact in one of the towers.
fleeing the fire...

I, along with the rest of the country, watched with gaping mouths and horrified eyes as this happened in 2001. I wasn't there. I wasn't clinging to the outside of a building, looking down at a street eclipsed by fire and flames. I wasn't facing my death like these people were. Twelve years later, my heart still aches for them; the humanity in me hopes they left this world quickly, with minimal suffering and pain. My eyes still tear up a little thinking of family members or friends who received their last phone calls from these people [& of course those at the Pentagon, as well]. I... can't... imagine.

Then, I selfishly think of my friends, my family members, acquaintenances I have.. who serve our country and her citizens... whether on military forces, local law enforcement, emergency responders, etc. I cringe to think of losing a single one of them. I share my country's brokenness at remembering every one of them that we lost from this: from that day, the days that followed, and over the course of time between then and now, here at home and overseas. My gratitude alone pales to what they and their families have endured, given and lost. To say I am thankful for them isn't a fraction of what I really mean.
mike kehoe, running up stairs while others fled down them.
[another from NatGeo]
As of today, I don't know the type of terror that thousands of people stared down facing their deaths or narrowly escaping them. I can believe that for them, for the families and for us as a still-grieving nation, that time does what it can to ease the immediate shock, that that it stops there and the rest is still relatively fresh for us all, in our own ways.

It's not over either. We lost four of our own one year ago today in the Benghazi embassy attack in Libya. Sure, the casualties in 2001 were a striking number, but lives are lives and this is not a movie. These people are not coming back, and for that, I am so.. so sad.

My goosebumps really start when I remember that not only did we fight back, but we rallied together on all fronts: locally, nationally and globally. YES, I am aware.. of the delicate line of crossing over into arguing about the war, about our government's decisions, etc.. but like I said, I'm leaving politics on the sideline for now and paying what respect I can to the PEOPLE who deserve them today.

The first flag that was raised on the site of the Twin Towers after the attack on 9-11-2001:

And today, our memorials for those sites:
twin towers, new york city
pentagon, washington d.c.

And of course.. the rebuilding of a single World Trade building.. as captured by an earth cam on a time lapse compilation. We RE-BUILD!

For the men and women of this country who have stepped up to serve it in the most dangerous ways as members of military operations: thank you. To your families, who are the primary support system for our troops: thank you. For our emergency reponders, law enforcement and volunteer aids: thank you.

.. And I'm praying. I'm praying for us as a nation. I'm praying for the knowledge and just decision from our country's leaders; regardless of my political beliefs, the leadership in place is who they are and for them.. I pray for wisdom, sound judgment, practicality and honesty. I'm praying for leadership on local levels, and for all of us from there on: for our military forces, their families, those responsible for educating and protecting our children in their classrooms.. and for.. for me: parents, children, siblings, friends, family and colleagues. I often fantacize of a world in which we proactively work to help each other... even if by no other means than not proactively hurting each other.. if that makes any sense.

It's a dream I have, but I found it put best by Gandhi:
.. and it starts with one.
My mission today: start small.. start with me. Start by showing compassion to someone else. Start by  adding those small, daily deposits to my daughter's life in teaching her the values of action. Start by remembering 9/11.

And to finish it up, I'll celebrate. I'll celebrate because I live in free country, protected by its members and supported by its citizens [again, politics aside, but do not confuse it with naiivity..].  I appreciate their service; I have many friends who serve our country and I know how hard they work.

One specifically, happens to have his birthday today... my amazing friend from my all the way to middle school in Mt. Vernon.. haha.. Ferg!

I hate that his birthday is shadowed by such a somber event, but there is absolutely nothing sad about how great this guy is.. and he deserves the best birthday ever!

Happy Birthday, Ferg!
ferg being the least attractive among his gorgeous wife & adorable dog.. :p
*Sigh.. The good news here: it's Hump Day! That means only two more days til the weekend and that is something I'm more than ready to see. Oh, and volleyball tonight. Winning (:

Thanks for tuning in, blogbots (:
Have an amazing week!

To Chop or Not to Chop?!

Oh, hello...
july 2013
Dilemma: I've been at war with myself for the past two months [at least] now, over whether or not to make the leap of cutting my hair. Honestly, I've never had this much trepidation over having short hair.. and I had to stop and wonder why that was...

Oh yeah, that's right. Two things!
1] The last time, I donated 13 inches of my hair. I shattered my collarbone into 10 pieces the following weekend and had to deal with the task of managing short hair.. with one arm.
& 2] When I did donate it then, I went to one of Cincinnati's best-known salons and came out with a bob that looked more like the shoulder-length-with-bangs do I had when I was 7. Not quite the edge I was hoping for... yeesh.
yeeeeup. short hair + newly-installed metal plate + 10 screws. awe-some. >:|
MMkay, bad timing. Since then, I've been overly-cautious about losing massive lengths at one time, which is an absolutely stupid thing to fear, I know.

That being said, the collarbone incident was over three years ago now, so I think I'm finally in the market for a new haircut.. and if I'm gonna do it, I'm gonna do it.

Thanks to the input from a few folks, here are some of the top contender styles [as of now.. I'm fickle, so for all I know, next week I'll be shopping for extensions. Who. Knows.].  Anyway... here:

For a much shorter, slightly conservative look:

If I'm thinking more bob-ish, but not too drastic [& the gal on the left has texture very similar to mine, if not a little straighter, naturally].. I almost picture the straightened version of the left picture as something like that on the right [two different people]:

Slightly more daring, I can't deny considering singer Kina Grannis.. because I love her, with long or short hair. She also has hair texture not unlike mine if I don't touch it with a straightener or a dryer...:

Of course if I was really feeling like going polar opposites, I could always do one of those and throw in an undercut [not undershaved, sorry] side, just for kicks [something I could still conceal, if need be] .. Of course, this fascination could also be that I just think Rosario Dawson is classically-gorgeous, as well. Who knows:

Lastly, I'm looking to my cousin for some encouragement; she just chopped her hair a few weeks back and while she.. looks... stunning in that particular cut, my hair would never agree with that so I'll be adding my own twist, of course. It is inspiring, motivating and encouraging though. Haha.
my too-beautiful cousin & her new do
*Sigh. I still wish I didn't feel so apprehensive about it, but I now know a few gals who I'd actually trust to the task and so that will be where I start, if I'm brave enough. The issues I have with my Spanipino [dad was Spanish {Madrid!} & Mom was Filipino {Cebuana}]

First world problems, I know.
#spanipinoproblems, more like it.
For now, I'm taking this to the streets of facebook; We'll see if I can find some solid advice from any of my friends who do this, yenno, for a living. (:

Ninjas. Tyra Banks. SYDNI!

[three unrelated things, btw]

So.... As most of you know, my day hinges on people.
Among the many firsts that I have encountered in the past few years of my job [usually in the form of the most bizarre answers to ordinary questions], today presented a new one:
#icallbluff. #ohreally #inthatcaseyou'rehired #youwin
^ Yes. The applicant put NINJA as a job title. This is real life, on a real application, at a real place. We didn't know what to think on this one, other than, "wow" and that this is just one of those amazing firsts that seem to be so rare anymore.

What's the weirdest thing you've seen on or put on a job application?

.... Moving on... here's something else to wrap the eyes around today.. I saw this on a friend's page and wanted to share. I'm not a prolific follower of Tyra Banks, the fashion industry, or really anything pop-culture in general; call me mildly savvy and informed, but certainly not a daily subscriber. This peaked my interest and I thought I'd share. I'm no makeup artist or stylist, but I know a few and give them all the credit in the world when their work is as exact and skilled as this.

Tyra Transformations!

l: cara delivingne | r: tyra... as cara
l: kate moss | r: tyra... as kate
l: cindy crawford | r: tyra... as cindy
Take note: I'm not promoting or supporting any certain lifestyle or image here [I have a self-obligated need to say that; I spent a lot of time in college counseling younger girls on the importance of inner-based self-worth, which so absolutely trumps physical and material worth.. but I digress]... I do see this as an incredible art form: the ability to transform into another person essentially, all via hair and makeup, is beyond my skillset and kind of cool to marvel over.

But.. FYI:
♥ this
^ I have nothing against models, but I do find it fascinating. The ladies on the bottom, to me, are gorgeous, and if we're being honest.... realistic. Again.. I digress. - Just sayin.

Last to mention but first on my priorities: Sydni's here this week and that means.... it's going to be a GOOD WEEK. (: (: (: We're stickering [yes, that's a verb when you have a 4-year-old] and having a party. Attending will be Mike Wazowski, Rapunzel, Curious George, a couple sorority girls [aka, Barbies {no disrespect intended}], a kangaroo, Frank the Ladybug Pillow Pet... and of course, Mickey Mouse.

Betcha wish you were here, huh.. haha.

Party time.

Exploring: SonRise Community Church

I did some exploration today. I've been back in Cincinnati for a couple of months now, but have been booked back to back to back lately with different things; I've been out of town every weekend for the past seven weekends alone, if that signifies anything. Haha. So today, I made it my mission to do what I've wanted to since I set foot back in this city: start exploring churches.

Today I visited SonRise, which is just minutes from my house. I ran into some faces I didn't expect to see: one from New Harmony of all places, and some others I've known from various places over the years. The guest speaker was from the Cincinnati Dream Center downtown, and overall it was an experience I liked!
It's a line to walk, I know, choosing a church family and home. Honestly, NO, I do not believe a church is solely a place, a building, or even a group of people. Trust me, I'm not naiive. I know firsthand how all of those things and then some can burn and at times have burnt me into a place of retreat.. resentment.. even complete disdain.. but my belief is that I am not part of a religion, but part of a faith, that starts with me and ends with service to others. It is not a popularity contest or political platform [though they do hold appropriate times and mediums], but a set of core values that I will stand by, regardless of what I'm faced with or challenged to do. It's not easy to stand alone, but it's harder to stand among values I don't have, pretending to agree and then trying to sleep at night. My philosophy is simple: Be kind. Love God. Love Others. Edify. Serve. I'm working on all of those things....

So for now.. I search. I would ask you to pray that wherever I am meant to be, that I find it and can plug into it. Honestly, I miss singing, I miss doing design work .. and I miss volunteering in that capacity. *Sigh.

Back at home, I took full advantage of it being Sunday, and made a mission to do as little as possible. I think it's the fact that I've not been home on a weekend in nearly two months that made it so easy to laze around on a beautiful day [in hindsight, I didn't even think to do exactly this on the river in a kayak.. but there will be plenty of time for this].. I'm just thankful.

You'll have to pardon what I realize was just an entirely disconnected slew of thoughts... it's been a long week and while I feel refreshed now, I can feel the edge of weighty decisions in a few arenas creeping in on me again and my mind is all over the place. No need to worry, but we'll leave it at that for now and I'll sort it out piece by piece. (:

Tomorrow = Monday = new work week = feeling... determined.
G'Nite (:

All KINDS of Flashbacks

Well today definitely trumped yesterday. I woke up at a decent morning hour, and right away was able to celebrate Sydni's first soccer practice! It's a little hard for me to grasp that she's actually a year older than I was when I started playing, but also that she is now playing... aaaand... that she appears to be a left-footer like me. Enter proud parent moment HERE. (: (:
ahhhh! my little leftwinger!
*Sigh. Time, please slow down! :/

On to the rest of the day, I had a few initial things in mind, but quickly realized I'd left my wallet in Mike's truck last night. I didn't mind at all; it gave me a reason to stop by Findlay Market for a couple hours to hang with him and Becky.
welcome to the only cool [outdoor] spot at market today
After market, I stopped by Kroger and snagged up a a couple of peaches for a cobbler recipe I've wanted to try. I came home...& fast forward to the finished product!
y-u-m.
If I do say so myself, this was.. a SUCCESS! This makes me look forward to Fall.. that means baking season for this non-baker. Maybe this year I'll get really good at this whole baking thing.. maybe. Haha.

Anyway, with a new dish under my belt, I spent the rest of the afternoon tidying up around the house and taking a nap before the evening began. It was a late start at that, too; I met up with Nader and Keith just after 11 in OTR. We wound up at Neon's, where I ran into some very familiar faces! I shouldn't act all that surprised, but it was a refreshing sight & hopefully the first of many reprises now that I'm back.
david & nina! blasts from the past... 2004 (:
OTR has yet to disappoint, even on a low-key night like this one. My favorite part of the entire evening however, was the 2-hour stretch of conversation that somehow always happens after the establishments- & even the streets- are quiet. I'm inspired and challenged by these little chats and realize again how thankful i am for candid friends in my life.
"the famous neon's unplugged" ... aka... neon's
summer 2013♥
Suuure, this is backdated... I didn't make it home until nearly 2:30am... and frankly I'm still a little sleepy.

I'll leave this on a grateful note: my friends, this incredible summer... family, Sydni, Rob... all of it (:

Until next time...

Old Lady Fridays

I'll never get over how long the 4-day weeks seem sometimes. It was only Monday of this week when Rob left again for Illinois and Labor Day came and went. Maybe it was the fact that I was sick for half the week and honestly just exhausted and out of sorts. Actually, I know that's exactly what it was. It's Friday and I am spent.

However, it's been nearly three full weeks since I last mowed my lawn, and if I'm being honest, I felt like collapsing in a heap tonight and waiting another few days at least. I forced myself yesterday though to get it out of the way today.
oh, my amazing friends.
Becky and Mike showed up while I wasparked on the couch reading;  I didn't notice them until Becky had fired up the mower and grazed a path through the yard. Haha. This is why I love my friends. It may not be often, but when I need help, I know they'll be there (:

After we'd finished mowing and weed-eating both my yard & my neighbor's [in return for having borrowed their mower most times this summer], we loaded up and found ourselves at the Brew River Gastro Pub just past Eli's. Not a bad little dive!
brew river

Back at home, Becky and Mike headed home, and I made the call to resign myself to the couch for the evening, accompanied by my book and the best blanket I've ever had. I forfeited some tentative plans I had to stop by Elisa's brother & my old college friend Drew's birthday celebration tonight in OTR; the week's been exhausting and I'm nnnnot moving until I go to bed...

...I'm old. Haha.
We'll try OTR tomorrow.
