FC Cincinnati.. We're Ready!

So Rob's never been to a pro soccer game, and now that Cincinnati has established on of our own, I'll have the privilege of taking him to his first ever, and on home turf, during an inaugural season, no less. That's a once in a lifetime thing, last time I checked ;).
established 2016
On my lunch break, I made a run downtown to the mini storefront for FC, where I found I was only the first of what would become a crowd in that small of a space. I came away with some new gear for Rob and myself, that will be saved in the closet until we head out that day for the game.
hi, fc!
I'm pumped to head down and watch this team play; I can't believe we're this far into the season and I haven't been to a game yet, but that ends asap - can't wait! The countdown's on - Seeeeee you there!

Don't Cry for Us, Argentina....

Instead of focusing on the fact that we handed the game to Messi & Co. tonight, let's take a moment to giggle at this:
[In case that means nothing to you, one word.. "WONDO."]

Anyway, before this disheartening event that was the USAvARG game, it was a sweltering little pre-evening that included a detour to get froyo.. because we could.
favorite little detour!
Sydni always gets super nostalgic when she eats cold things, which I still don't understand, but it has been habit lately that whenever there is froyo involved, so also there is the review of all things little Sydni. On today's trip down the highlight reel, we spotted a shot of baldish baby Syd giving me a crinkly-face grin, with all four of her teeth bared for the world to see.

Naturally, this followed:
then & now... haha
What can ya do?

With froyo under our belts before dinner [if you tell my mom, I will fight you!.. haha], we headed home, where Sydni split off like a lightning bolt on her bike. She and a couple of the neighbor kids have wasted no time in their descent upon the newest neighbors, whose open garage stacked with small, colorful bikes and toys are a dead giveaway as to whether or not kids live there. I watched them running circles around the yard for a little while before retiring to my own tasks of wedding schhhtuff.

And then Becky came over.
And then the USMT kicked off against Messi & Co.
And then in like, the 8th minute or something like that, we started our slow but steady trip-and-fall off the cliff to a 4-0 loss against the Argentinians.

Ouch.

Well, it was a good run boys. Copa just wasn't meant to be ours this time around.

It's late, and there's a lot to do tomorrow, or so I think.. haha.
G'Nite, loves.

Mondays are for Movies!

We only kind of planned to do it, but I'm glad we did.

This:
... plus this:

= one happy little trio of a family and a heart full of little 3D baby Dory giggles all the way home.

Oh, and if you haven't seen this yet, go see it in 3D.
And sit like... no more than 10 rows back.
'Nuff said.

For Philia.

[There is] Agápe. Éros. Storge.
And [then there is] Philia.

Philia: The love of, for & from friends, that supercedes your ugliest day. The expression of gratitude for those in your tribe, who in every season of life remain constant & present, real & honest, solid & still beautifully vulnerable. Through just even this recent chaos, take a time out to remind someone what they mean to you, and to accept the same in return.
♥.
Thanks for this, Mare; I'll save it for a cloudy day - and it will come, that's life! - when I need it the most. You're stellar, friend - love yewww!

P.S. - Seriously, go & tell someone who isn't expecting it, just what they mean to you. It might not be your last chance.... but what if it is? Just sayin'. We could all use a bit more love these days.

Father's Day: A Letter to Rob

You guys get the same picture, because well.. just because.

Dear Rob,

Look at our crazy, unpredictable and completely amazing little life we have. We both work full time, have a new home that is about 35% fully moved-in, friends & family events out of town once, twice, sometimes three times in a month, hobbies, sports, everything that is Sydni and then each other at the end of the day. We're adventurers and wanderers on a Saturday and hermits the next. We're in hyper speed sometimes, and other days seem as though we sprouted out from dedicated spots on the couch or recliner.

This is us. This is why I love us.

I thought a lot about what I could say to you that would be appropriate for Father's Day, and of course the obvious came to mind: Sydni. The obvious reality that you're not her biological father stands to make little difference when it comes to the relationship you have formed with her. It seems like the past almost 4 years now have flown by, but when I look at you and Sydni, I know that the type of bond you're building with her is timeless. I count myself very blessed knowing that she essentially has 2 moms and 2 dads who love her to the ends of the earth and back, each in our own separate ways, and for that, from you, I'll never have words to show you how much that really means.

I really don't know if otherwise, Syd would have the framework at her fingertips to learn practical mechanical skills, or those more involved, at that. It fills my heart beyond measure to watch the two of you "working" together on a motor, or fixing something as a team. You are always so quick and eager to oblige her curious nature, taking things apart and finding out how they work. She looks up to you as the obvious answer when something isn't working, or a project needs to be done. You have given her that security, and are teaching her to develop it for herself. She loves you, and I love you even more for how she loves you and you love her in return.

Beyond that though, we have two dogs who I don't need to tell you test my patience more often than not. As silly as it sounds, when we first got together [& thank my mom for this one], I paid close attention to how you treated Sasha, as I've always found that indicative of how a man will treat other humans, namely his family and his children. She was just as unruly and goofy then as she is now, and you've always loved her in spite of it. Furbabies are kids, too, and the perfect opportunity for me to see your compassion, patience and willingness to deal with the hands-on, dirty stuff. Seriously. You probably didn't know until now that I noticed that, but I did. It was an early, comforting sign to me that there was something I would be sorely losing if I didn't pursue you the way you pursued me.

Now, as we near the day we'll be married, and eventually parenting more children of our own, I need you to know, to truly download, just how much you mean to me as the man that will fill both of those roles: husband, and then father.

I am not always an easily-lovable person, and I know that. I'm stubborn, passionately resolute, moody at times, determined, impatient and mostly unconcerned with the bells and whistles of magazine-ad ladylikeness. You seem to, for some mysterious reason, love me in spite of those things.. unruly hair and all. I don't have to wonder if I or our family will ever become your second priority. I see what you do for us, and what you've already invested in just the four short years we've been together. I hope you know that I am in this 100% with you, and I count myself blessed to get to share this lifetime with you.

You are already such a wonderful father to Sydni. It baffles me, given that you and Sydni met when she was 3. You jumped right in, as though it was a silent, mutual understanding between you and Syd that you would both learn it along the way, on the fly, but together. She gravitated to you from the beginning. I don't doubt at all that kids are able to see sometimes what we want to believe but often guard ourselves from accepting. They see it immediately. And they react. Sydni has always wanted to spend time with you - do what you're doing, fix what you're fixing, understanding whatever tinkering project you have at hand. She wants to power wash cars with you, and yet knows that you'll sit and read a bedtime story when it's all done. I have zero doubts that as we grow together and are hopefully blessed with more children, that they'll grow into the type of person you are - loving openly and wholly, and seeing the best in every situation.

Thank you for what you've already given to me, to Sydni and to us as a little family. I cannot wait to celebrate another year of fatherhood with you this year, and every year thereafter. You're my person, and you're our person. Sydni and I love you to the moon & back. Happy Father's Day!

Father's Day: A Letter to My Dad

I felt this was warranting a 2nd entry for today, because it's Father's Day and these two men deserve so much more than a single blog entry, let alone a shared one!

Dear Dad,

To the man who raised an adopted child willingly, whole-heartedly and eagerly. Who put in long hours at the office, traveled globally for work and ceaselessly fought to provide for his family in whatever way was necessary: I may not have seen it then, but as a parent now - as an adult now, I see the raw energy that it takes day.. after day.. after day.. to grin and bear it when it seems sometimes like you might break. You did that for me, for Mom, for our family and because you are a true man of your word and commitment to put God and family first.

Growing up, you have loved me at my very worst, praised me at my best, and conditioned me along the way in between. You were present, involved, candid. You were my father before you were ever my friend, and no matter how much I pushed back, you never faltered, and proved to me what it meant to have a real backbone. You taught me boundaries, and what I deserved to seek for myself. You showed me what I'm worth, but instilled in me the humility that would ward off any false sense of entitlement. You demonstrated work ethic, and its rewards. I saw in you a solid resolve to focus on the big picture.

You [& Mom] groomed me to think on my feet, be open but aware and conscious of the world around me. You prayed hard that the seeds of discernment, humility and graciousness you both worked to plant would take firm roots in my heart and show their fruits through my life choices. You taught me to drive, and undoubtedly prayed feverishly that I would return unscathed, every time I left the house in your car. You dealt with insurance when I crashed into things. You were very open about consequences, and enforced them consistently. Little by little, you cut off my resources, until the point at which I was ready enough to embark onto the blank canvas that would become my own path. I hated those Franklin Covey seminars when I was 15; I still don't like them, but at least now I appreciate having had them. ;).

I existed nervously through the time you had Viral Meningitis. Through your double bypass heart surgery. Through the loss of your career; I watched you not only recover from that friend/coworker's selfish acts of secret betrayal, but come to later forgive him without stipulation. You denied yourself the satisfaction of reveling in the karma that came back to him, but instead showed him kindness, a firm handshake and that smile that we know means you are speaking from your heart. You forgave, and you moved on. You endured in ways that some people my age and older cannot. You were honest and open about your emotions. You rarely shed tears, but I remember clearly you crying when necessary and assuring me that true, unmatched strength comes with transparency and the ability to feel. When my Grammy - your mom - passed, you managed to pick 20-year-old me up from my brokenness in spite of just having said goodbye to your mother. You allowed me to grieve when I experienced loss, whether it was an audition, a pet, or one of our friends or family members. You shaded me from things I didn't need to see, yet didn't shield me from the realities of human nature and what we were capable of afflicting on other people, and vice versa. I learned to cope, negotiate, reason with and walk away from people when the time came, because of you.

You were there the day Sydni was born. You were the first man to hold her. The first member of our family that she met. She has been glued to you since then, and I will always say that is why. There is a bond between you and her that is unique; in all of the closeness you and I have, I still think there is a special depth to your bond with Sydni that will only be yours. I love that. You are a mentor, role model and friend to her. You are her Pappy. You are the one she runs to first for hugs. It's your lap that she finds when you're here, at the end of the night and she needs a safe, comfortable place to read stories, tell silly jokes, play Go Fish, or fall asleep. You encourage me to pursue my best self each day, for her sake. You've become a third father figure to Rob, and provide him added courage to do the same, for Sydni and for the children he and I hope to have in the future.

And you've shown me how to fight for my relationships, specifically my marriage. Beyond that, you have shown me the mercies of a true father: the kind that are not just sympathy, but of stern words as well, reminding me that in relational failure, the fault in some cases is shared. As I grew into my adult life, you and Mom have been open about your insecurities, your successes and the work you both have put into each other. I wouldn't even fill a handful of fingers counting the times I remember seeing you argue in front of me, but I remember hearing you both apologize to each other. You never kept score, and you made sure that I felt secure, always.

Dad, you're not a perfect person, and you've been very transparent about that. I love you even more deeply for your ability to recognize it and not project onto me the ways in which you may have failed in the past. You've gifted me the confidence to pursue my heart's desires, love freely and loyally, approach parenthood with the understanding that I'll never be perfect at this either... and that's okay.

I'm thankful for that, and for you, every day, but today just happens to be a good one to express it openly. There's so much I haven't said here, but the point remains that you are the foundation of who I am, and I wouldn't be where I am without you. Sydni would be a different person, I'm sure, without your influence, and as you were designed by God to be Mom's perfectly-imperfect mate, I know she appreciates you for who and what you are, too.

I love you, Dad - today is for the men like you. Cheers ♥♥

City Fleaaaaa!

I woke up with an especially ambitious spirit this morning, and took off on a run to begin the day.
Yes, I did that on purpose, and No, I'm not ill. In fact, Rob even jumped in on the last lap, much to my pleasant surprise. Thanks for supporting my crazy ideas of morning fitness, love ♥.
it's a happy day to feel happy :D
We cleaned up a bit [& by that, I mean changing clothes; don't pretend like I took a shower.. that's silly] & headed downtown to meet up with Becky at CityFlea513. I love this time of the year for this specific reason, and although I don't attend every weekend of Flea, I do love drinking it in yearly.

& quite possibly my favorite shot that I've seen so far [as my phone was buried in the bottom of my cotopaxi this entire trip >:(... ]

The best part of CF513, besides all the crazy cool and crafty vendors, was running into Lauren & Sara, two sisters who I still hold dear after nearly 14+ years since our silly college days. They now run Mixie Studios, and have the most adorable collection of unique goodies for you, so if you plan on CFlea513'ing at any point this summer, make sure you go see them.. and BUY SOMETHING!

For the sake of throwbacks, a bonus:
haha.. oh boy. circa.. 2007.
Fortunately, La & Sa still look pretty much the same.. beautiful as ever, and even more fortunately, I finally figured out what eyebrows were and that they should be left on your face. Sheesh.

Anywho, it was a beautiful day to be out and about, and although Rob & I had every intention of the additional jazz festival in the evening, we both awoke from "short naps" about 4 hours after sitting down on separate sides of the room, and by that point well..

Happy Saturday, blogbots. I hope you're able to get out there and enjoy it!
