Happy Birthday, Landon!

Happy 3rd birthday, Landon!

Today, we headed over to the Vetta building down the street from us to celebrate Landon's 3rd birthday. He loves Cars [the movie], so the entire event was designed around that theme. Lara did an excellent job planning all of it, the kids had an excellent time in the 10 bounce houses, and the adults had an excellent time drilling soccer balls into the back of the net. All around, everybody won. :)

Lara's probably one of the most talented cake bakers I've actually met. She did this little number to share with everyone, and I think we were all clearly impressed.

The kids in attendance even received a CD with some cute musical numbers from various movies. [Sydni showcased her dancing skills all around the living room to this soundtrack once we got home.]

Kudos again, to Lara & Alex for putting together such a great birthday party! Landon certainly wasn't the only one to have a blast today!

Oh-Nine-Oh-Nine, Twenty-Eleven: The Big Deal

What's the big deal about 9.9.11?

Aside from it being 2 years from Sydni's original due date [9.9.09, would've been pretty cool, yeah?], today apparently has an interesting mathematical value. I wouldn't have thought to look into this, but kudos to the guy that did. I admire people who study the symmetry and mathematical values of certain dates and random occurrences, because I for one can't even get my accounting figures in order half the time ;).

Read all about this HERE.

You know what else is cool about today? It's Friday. That means this obnoxiously chaotic week is coming to a close, and the weekend is now upon us. Tomorrow is Landon's birthday party, so I should really go and wrap up the little gifts we have for him.

Early start tomorrow! G'Nite....

Blessed Are The Focused

[an excerpt from today's entry by Max Lucado]:

Each of you has recieved a gift to use to serve others. - 1 Peter 4:10
** There is only so much sand in the hourglass. Who gets it? You know what I'm talking about, don't you?.... "The PTA needs a new treasurer. With your background and experience and talent and wisdom and love for kids and degree in accounting, YOU are the perfect one for the job!".... It's a tug-of-war, and you are the rope.
"Blessed are the meek," Jesus said. The word meek does not mean weak. It means focused. It is a word used to describe a domesticated stallion. Power under control....
Blessed are those who recognize their God-given responsibilities. Blessed are those who acknowledge that there is only one God and have quit applying for his position. Blessed are those who  know what on earth they are on earth to do and set themselves about the business of doing it.
- In the Eye of the Storm

--------------------------------------------

I am built to serve others.
Am I serving others?
No?
Why not?

It's not my job to know why God's words sometimes hit me harder than they do other times, but it is my job to react. I've had an ongoing itch that's been compelling me to do something more, for more than just myself. Just something I've been thinking about today, and I felt like I should share....

Anne Geddes

Anne Geddes' work is arguably about the cutest stuff I've ever come across. Most of America has probably seen her stuff; perhaps we didn't realize it, but we have. All those adorable little babies dressed up in everything from tulip petals to firemen hats are probably a product of Geddes' creative genius. I personally love browsing through her work, not because it's particularly difficult to create, but because I can see the passion in what she does and because babies really are just downright adorable.

A friend of mine sent this to me today; she knows I'm a sucker for Geddes, and with my sunflower wedding quickly approaching, she knew I would appreciate this. [[Thanks, Kanice!]]

Sydni is very fortunate that I haven't subjected her to this type of photography. I'm quite the hound when it comes to good photo opps, and I would have, in a heartbeat, enlisted the services of Ms. Geddes if she were anywhere within earshot.

Consider yourself lucky, Syd, that your high school graduation will only have normal pictures. :)

Really, though >>>
how cute??

This led me to dig up another one of my favorite Geddes shots from a collection she did a few years ago. After a while, it might seem a little repetetive, and the cuteness starts to dull once you've seen 100 snuggly infants seemingly nestled in flower pots, watermelons, or Christmas tree ornaments. This one caught my eye because I love, love, love, love wrinkly dogs, and I love them even more next to wrinkly babies!

Come onnnn. Tell me that's not hilarious.
I wanna squeeze that baby's cheeks [the ones on his face], and I want that puppy to come and live with me for at least a week :)

Adorable.

Thanks again for the pick-me-up, KK!

A Short Long Day

classically crazy
Today was one of those days: It wasn't a Monday, but it was the first day of the work week since yesterday was an observed holiday. That meant that everything that is typically Monday gets loaded onto Tuesday, along with Tuesday itself. I started out the day with a client tour on-site, and after that headed straight into the office. I don't think we stopped to breathe but a few times today, and the first time I looked at the clock after getting here surprised me when it said 1:36pm. By 5:00, I wouldn't have been able to tell you which way was up verses which was down, let alone where the entire day had gone.

It wasn't unproductive, though, I'll tell you that. Today was absolutely fruitful, but chaotic nonetheless.
And that's the way, uh-huh, uh-huh, I like it.

That's pretty much all I can say about today.

We're halfway through the work week almost. That's a good sign :).

Labor Day Projects

Happy Labor Day!

I find it particularly ironic that I was off work today, while my husband, who works for the government, was at his desk for a large portion of the day. Interesting.

I'm not complaining at all though; I had the entire day to spend with Sydni, which is a rare occurrence these days. It was a long overdue Mommy-Daughter day, and I soaked up every minute of it.  We ran all kinds of errands to continue tying up all the ends for the wedding, and we even took on a project together. She pooped out on me halfway through it, which was okay, because spray paint and nails really aren't appropriate for toddlers.

Spray paint and nails?

Yup. Let's backtrack to a week or so back when Meagan planted the idea in my head of an idea she'd seen for a jewelry rack. It was perfect timing, since the current setup I have at home is apparently failing, miserably. For a long time, my system seemed flawless - I had one of those brushed chrome shower caddy things on a hook hanging over my closet door, from which I hung everything from necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and even clipped on any accessories that lacked hooks. What I didn't realize was that, because I'm constantly producing new pieces, that sucker got pretty heavy. About a week ago, Sydni flung the closet door shut and the whole operation came crashing down, breaking several pieces and creating a huge mess.

step 1 [top left]: detach ugly picture from neat frame
step 2 [top right]: attach leather thread & nails
step 3 [bottom left]: spray paint and wait....
step 4 [bottom right]: hang!

Long story short: this idea of Meagan's requires an empty picture frame with wire/ribbon/string across the center for hanging things, and some nails along the sides for additional space. I jumped all over that, and used it as a viable excuse to head to Goodwill. I don't ever need an excuse to go there, but it didn't hurt. I found the perfect frame, surely passed by because of the rustic artwork it held, and snagged it up for a whopping $3. My next stop was Hobby Lobby, where I grabbed some last minute bead needs and a can of textured spray paint for $7. I had nails at home, along with a great scrap roll of leather string, so the whole project cost $10 and took about an hour from start to finish.

before & after

I have to admit, it does look much better than the shower caddy, which still hangs in its old spot but is now home to a small variety of cords, cables, and camera accessories. It's still useful, but in moving jewelry over, I realized a few pieces had been hidden in the condensed clutter, so everyone wins with this one.

AND!
While I was waiting for the paint to dry on the frame, I went ahead and wrapped up something that's been on my creative to-do list for just over a week now. Diana had brought me an earring whose match she had somehow lost over time, and didn't want to wear the rest of the ensemble until every piece was in tune. I couldn't find the exact beads, but I did my best with what I had to re-create a similar idea.

original in the center, mine on the sides

Doesn't look too bad, right? :)

So, by the time Joe got home, we had all kinds of things show him. He only laughs, because he's well aware of how nutty I get when it comes to making jewelry or taking on other miscellaneous projects.

This is going to be a short work week, and I am A-OKAY[!!] with that.

Happy Labor Day!

If You Want Me To

The pathway is broken, and the signs are unclear.
And I don't know the reason, why you brought me here.
But just because you love me, the way that you do,
I will walk through the valley, if you want me to.

Because I'm not who I was, when I took my first steps,
and I'm clinging to the promise, you're not through with me yet.
So if all of these trials bring me closer to you,
then I will go through that fire, if you want me to.

Though it may not be the way, I would have chosen,
when you lead me through a world, that's not my home
But you never said it would be easy.
You only said I'd never go alone.

So when the world turns against me, and I'm all by myself,
and I can't hear you answer my cries for help.
I'll remember the suffering your love put you through,
and I'll go through the valley if you want me to.
***
I sang that in church today, and the more I think about that song , its lyrics, and its ultimate meaning, the more I love it. This is such a powerful song, and I am so glad that I had the opportunity to share this with my Towerview family. Ginny Owens is one of my favorite Christian singers, and this song was perfect for me today.

***
After church, we headed out to Eckert's with the Page family for lunch, and then back to their house for a short little visit. Sydni absolutely loves her time with Miss Carlee and Miss Loralye, if for no other reason than the fact that she gets spoiled beyond belief when she's there.

See that girl there?
That's her throne that was set up for her by the Page girls; she soaked up every minute of having her very own special seat on the couch - complete with headrest, footrest, and personal blanket.

So silly. :)
Sundays are beautiful. They really are.
