40 Day Lent Letters: Completed!

So, YAY!

Forty days ago, I committed to acknowledging Lent in a way that would be appropriate for me, a non-Catholic. I don't really have any must-have vices that I felt I needed to shelve for that time, so I borrowed Marianne's idea of sending just a simple note, once a day to a different person.

Remember this?
day 1 : march 5, 2014!
Well, today was the 40th and final day of these little letters. Strangely enough, I felt a little sad that I'm now done with these; I looked forward a little every day to the note I was about to write, and prayed that I would have the right words for whoever it would be. There's something about knowing a task but not knowing the recipient that makes something like this a little more fun (:
Anyway, I am done. Lent Letter #40 is sealed up & ready to be mailed first thing tomorrow morning. Narrowing the list down to only 40 people was somewhat of a harrowing task, but I know there was a specific reason for each of these people. That being said, RECAP!

In other news for today: Rob, Sydni and I started the day together with a solid message from SonRise, then made a pitstop for Rob to get his hair cut. Sydni and I ran a couple of errands and had a mini photo shoot to commemorate the beautiful day..
my favorite girl ♥♥♥♥
... & the rest of the reel ;)
Back at home, Rob started digging into the boat; it's time to wake that sleepy thing and get it ready for the season. Sydni took to her squirt guns and spent a couple hours assaulting everything from the front porch to the curb... us included (:. Kalyn invited us over for a bit to play some volleyball and grill out, so we of course obliged.

Kalyn's neighbors have a rather old pet rabbit named Dusty. Sydni made quick friends with Dusty...

I made a solo trip to Fairfield for soccer while Rob & Sydni stayed back at home. We narrowly missed pulling off a win, but in our defense, we were running a man short for the game since the rest of the team didn't make an appearance [womp womp....]. It was a nice workout, no less. I headed back home to find my three girls curled up on the new dog beds. Well, at least two of them were on there....
poor sasha... haha
^ Yep. Sydni had dragged the dog beds out to the living room and curled up next to Stella. Poor Sasha got jipped, but did what she could to at least have a pillow and make the best of an unfortunate [for her] situation ;)

I love this little family of mine. ♥♥♥♥♥

Volleyball Begins!

Volleyball!

I spent most of today anxiously awaiting the first night of sand volleyball with the usual suspects. Chad is joining us this year, and even though we didn't show up to tie down a win for the evening, we were happy to get back out there and see the familiar Hahana faces from last year.

Rob showed up at the end of our third set, just in time to sit down with us and have dinner. It was definitely a chilly night to get the season started, but I'm pretty excited knowing it will only get warmer from here on out, and that means long nights of fun in the sand.

I took off long before Rob did, heading home to shower and relax. He stayed behind to hang out with Kalyn and Chad, meeting me later at home.

Also, I got word from some others today that my little Lent Letters are hitting their marks, and that makes me happy. Never underestimate the power of even the smallest, handwritten note. (:

Good night, blogbots!

Missions Trip: The Decision

SO, hello Wednesday.
Hello rain...
... and snow.
Basically, hello, Ohio. Good to see you're still doing wel-- just doing. Glad to see you're at least consistently indecisive.

Aaaaanyway...
Today is Day 8 of my 40-Day Lent Letter promise:
day 8!
I've officially been doing this for a full week now, every day, and want to again just take a quick sec to encourage everyone to try this. Maybe not for Lent, but perhaps your own list, for your own reason. I'm a huge fan of the old fashioned handwritten note and this one today reminded me that even when writing to the people closest and often times most obvious to us, there are somehow things I don't know that I've ever said to them.. or at least not recently enough.

It's only been 8 days. I am not expecting anything in return with these, but to know that I'm making one person [hopefully] smile with just a small but sincere note is a very humble reminder of the responsibility we have to be active contributors in our relationships.

Our impacts are only as big as we allow them to be, but I'm a firm believer that they more often start with those closest to us. That, of course, got me to thinking.

Really, I'm certain I'm being called to do something bigger than [and in addition to] this.

I've just stepped out of a weekend spent with some of the finest friends I have. As it happens, two of my greatest friends both recently returned from separate, unrelated trips of service and mission in other countries. Becky realized her long-time dream of Nepal earlier this year:
becky during the dedication of their
finished project [construction] in nepal

.. And Marianne is still quite fresh on her return from a missions-based trip to Guatemala.
mare loving on those adorable kids!
It's not that I am jealous. I'm really not. Every service trip has its own purpose, its own timing and its own set of gratitudes to be earned. What I am, is more inspired than anything else. It's not that I don't want to go to follow either of their trips to Nepal or Guatemala, but I do know that we are called to reach our arms as far as we can, and wherever that is, is where I'll be.

My request now, friends, is this:
Please pray for me.

A trip like this isn't something you plan out in a week's time. It's not a weekend getaway or a vacation. It's something to which I must be connected on a raw, unfiltered level, purposed to serve not myself, but someone else. As an internationally-adopted child myself, the very thought of positioning myself to serve in an orphanage is exhilirating, humbling and frankly, a little terrifying. I would love to believe that I have the emotional stability to contain myself in the faces of children who are not in the least unlike I was once. I know though, that I want to, and will be loving with all I have on some people I've not yet met.

The praying [for this] starts now.
The research starts now.
The planning starts now.
2015.

I am only asking now for you to pray for me. Please pray that the direction I choose is a selfless endeavor to kneel at the feet of the Least of These and offer the best of what I've been given, and that by this time next year, I'll be in the final stages of preparation for a trip.
The I heard the voice of the Lord saying,
"Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?"
And I said, "Here am I. Send me!"
Isaiah 6:8

.. And you are welcome to join. Serious inquiries, only. Let me know, and we can pray for this together.

To end the day, I received some rather EXCITING [though at this time, pre-emptive] news from one of these beautiful souls I call friends. I can't elaborate on it right now, but I will use it as a testament that we serve no small God. Hopefully I'll be able to share more about this later, in a couple days or so. Sorry for the teaser!

On that note, the here-and-now of this evening ends with Sydni on one side of me and Rob on the other. This is my family, and this is where I'm happiest. I'm in love with it. Sweet dreams!

AHHH! FRIIIIIDAY!!

I knew it would be a good day when I arrived at work, sat down and authored up the little note for day 3 of my Lent Letters. And yes, it's taken me three days to decide I'm calling them Lent Letters. Anyway, Friday opened up with that, and only got better from there.

day 3 (:
Friday lunch = Rusty Bucket. Nom. Nom. Freakin' NOM. (:
rusty bucket!
There was a small hiccup when I arrived home and found that Sasha, in what was probably a 5-hour [at least] span of boredom, had annihilated her pillow:
good work, sasha.. haha
^ Really nothing serious, just a poor pup who was locked up all day. I can't say I'd be any different. Fortunately, it was a quick cleanup, followed by a couple loads of laundry and a whole-house re-clean before the company rolled in.

Rob made it home from work mid-evening, and after a power nap, I awoke to the sound of car doors in my driveway.

They. Are. Here!!!

Sure, I should have a picture to mark their arrival, but let's be honest: I think we all know there will be plenty of those to go around this weekend.

G'Night!
