Friggin' Relapse. | D13.

Yeah.. so about that moment of ecstatic but temporary relief I had the other day [yesterday]:

sayonara.
*sad me.

So here's my next battle plan:

Sinuses, meet the neti syringe.

Neti syringe, meet my sinuses.

I'm going to, for the sake of both brevity and gag reflexes, spare you the graphic details of what this produced. Anyone who's ever done the neti pot, the syringe, or any variation of a saline sinus rinse, ya'll know.... this isn't a beautiful thing.. [lol].

Long story short, while I spent a solid 3 hours post-rinse blowing my nose, it did alleviate some of the pressure in my head. In my attempts to follow holistic remedies, I drank some apple cider vinegar, too.

Oh, the things we health nuts do to avoid western medicine. womp womp womp....

Keep in mind I've lacked the ability to taste anything pretty much all week. So to celebrate a window of cleared sinus pressure, I whipped up this little buddy and admit it's never tasted better:

lemon pepper salmon & garbonzo-cucumber salad
nom nom nom.

So while it seems now as though I should probably just come to terms with this sinusitis, or whatever I have plaguing my head, I really don't want to. I've scheduled a dr. appt for Tuesday of next week; I hope this has let up by that time, but if not, I might just have to give in and actually.take.medicine.

We'll see.

The VOICE. Can I just say....

With all the reality show competitions now, I try to just stay away from all of them just because I feel that we've quickly become over-saturated with the 'next big' [you name it]- everything from piccolo player to cathedral architect it seems. That's why I was so hesitant to settle in and watch not just the season premiere of The Voice [on NBC], but the 2nd episode, too [yeah, believe it].

For anyone who hasn't caught any of this: A quick rundown...

On shows like American Idol, the televised nation gets to watch a fame-craving artist audition in front of a jury of experts in that field. What I found interesting here was that while there is a panel of 4 celebrity musicians/recording artists, each person(s) auditioning had to rely solely on their vocal abilities, because the judges had their backs turned. Sure, it's not a mind-blowing concept, but it's definitely a breath of fresh air on the spin of things.

So once a judge [Blake Shelton, Cee-lo Green, Christina Augilera, Adam Levine] decided he or she liked the 'voice' they heard, that lucky auditioner became a part of said celebrity's "team".

Following?

K.

Well, for the 2nd episode, each celeb had to pit two of his/her own teammates against each other at the same time, singing the same song. It's not often that I watch a performance more than twice, but this one got me hooked. I'm admittedly jealous of the vocal talent of both of these girls, and as a kinda-sorta singer myself, I absolutely loved this rendition of Perfect, by Pink. Whether you like the song, like Pink, or like singing competitions, you have to admit.. this is talent :)

Kind of inspiring, to me at least.

Hello, Upswing | Hello, Twelve!

YESSSSS....

I woke up this morning with some sinus pressure, which I'm assuming is because I've got a sinus infection. [Oh well]. The good news: I can feel myself on an upswing!

My mother deserves all the thanks in the world for educating me on the right way to handle this sort of thing. Anyone who knows me knows that I haven't touched anything even resembling a tylenol in years. I just can't bring myself to do it. Don't think that I judge anyone who does; it's just not my thing. I'm not a huge follower of Western Medicine's typical approach: "RX, RX, RX... ." I've found that if I follow holistic methods properly and consistently [at least for minor stuff like I've got now], I'll see the same results without that bandaid effect.

My saving graces:

|| echinacea ||
|| been relying on this stuff since childhood ||
|| by Herb Pharm ||

|| vitamin c + echinacea + elderberry extract ||
|| my immune system ♥'s these little chewables ||
|| by Integrative Therapeutics, Inc. ||

I can already feel the pressure in my head subsiding, and the feelings of vertigo I had this morning are starting to dissipate as well. Here's hoping the rest of today and the rest of this week show equal signs of improvement. I'm feelin' pretty good......... fingers crossed!

|| breakfast ||
|| greek yogurt + blueberries + pear slices + green tea ||
|| p.s. - tastebudes activated!||

Oh yeah, and I'm tasting things, now, too.
SCORE.
:]
Happy Wednesday!

Day TEN: Wrath of the Contagious Toddler

I could probably count on one hand the number of times I've been sick in the last 9 or 10 years.

That's excluding this year.
Why?

Patrolling my house is an adorable little germ-bot whose most recent pestilential powers include the ability to contract new virus strains and pass them right along to yours truly.
Oh, the 'between the lines' of motherhood.
Remember last week, when I called off work for the first time to accomodate a Sydni Sick Day?
Well, I'm happy to report that she's just about back to 100%, which only means one thing:

Someone's gotta take the bug. Whooooo wants it?? I feel like I got caught on the wrong end of a roulette wheel with this one. Not only did I contract the fever (102.2 today, folks), I have the entire package: fever, sore throat, sinus headache, migraine, and nasal swelling that has completely shut down the right side of my nose.

Awesome.

Bad news: I did not tackle any sort of any-mile run that I'd had planned today. I can barely stay awake, let alone function properly in an exercise capacity.

Good news: I'll be 3 for 3 on the Moreno plan today. I can't taste anything, but I know it's healthy. Let's stay positive. :)

Mother's Day 2011 [Day 9]

incredible woman | my mother

Dear Mom,

I feel like each year, you receive a card stating how wonderful you are and how we all wish you the most enjoyable and rewarding Mother's Day, ever. I feel like that's a bit routine, even though we don't really have a template to celebrate.

There aren't many women like you. I would venture to say that there are no other women exactly like you. The life you exude is completely capable of turning heads around you and transferring that contagious positive energy. It wasn't until we no longer lived under the same roof that I realized the full capacity of your love, your generosity, and your heart for everyone and everything in your life. You give, and give, and give, without ever asking for anything in return, and more often than not go silently under-appreciated. Your vitality is indescribable in that it can only be felt by meeting you in person.

You are the example of unconditional love and support that I will model to my daughter. To any other children with whom our future may give us. You are the energy I strive to have still have when I see the years you have. You are the wife my father is blessed to have. You are the pet owner that would save every single one if you could. You're the cook celebrities would covet if they knew. I could go on. Your hospitality is unrivaled.

And then there's your granddaughter. She loves visiting, and I feel completely confident that Nana & Pappy will give her the perfect vacation. My absence is compensated with a peace of mind knowing she is in good hands.

You've taught me compassion, patience, and humility. You educated me in the essential things like diet, exercise, common sense, and determination. Our relationship was not a perfect one, but your consistency is something that as a mother myself I now admire. You watched me make the wrong choices and sheltered me just enough to learn on my own without destroying what I was or could be. You encouraged my faith, and asked me to more or less ask myself the important questions when I found myself splitting hairs at a decision. I will always be indebted to you and your wisdom. I owe you more than just thanks, Mom.

I love you, more than you'll ever know.
I hope that today was indeed the best Mother's Day you've had.

Love Always,
-me

----------------------------------------

I wouldn't dare forget the other mother in my life without whom we would be lost. My mother-in-law is an incredible woman whose generosity and support have helped build us, sustain us, and move us forward. Your son is an equally extraordinary man, undoubtedly so because of your abilities as a mother. I am grateful for all you've done, all you're doing, and all I'm sure you will do for us. Happy Mother's Day, Sandy!

joe & his mother

And last, but most certainly not least, where would I be without my little reason to celebrate this day?! She is tiny, but her impact is much mightier than you'd think. Her smile is contagious, and her laugh makes me feel like nothing else in the world will ever matter. I am blessed and undeserving of her unconditional love, trust, and dependency. She is the driving force behind our little family, and I can't wait for the adventures to come with this little one.

my reason to celebrate!
Happy Mother's Day, to all mothers everywhere. You're one of a kind. :)

P.S. - Threw the diet book pretty much out the window today. Bad reflection of my dedication, again. Monday's a new week and we're going 21 for 21 on meals this week. Just you watch.

8. *sigh.

dare you to say no....

[indoor] picnic lunches

Say hello to fresh fruit & veggies, homemade pineapple bake, organic lemonade, homemade whip cream, fresh turkey, artisan bread, hummus, and organic condiments.

Today is our kickoff to Mother's Day weekend, and that's what my mom yielded for a picnic lunch. Our original outdoor plans were foiled by this incessant rain, but fear not: we'll make a picnic anywhere we can. That includes hotel rooms. :) We almost invited the neighbors; my mom's notorious for preparing enough to satisfy a small army. We haven't complained yet, though, and we won't start now, either. My only disclaimer here is that there was no greek yogurt involved today. I kept the regular 3-a-day green tea schedule, so thumbs up there.

We took a family trip to Sawyer Point for a park playdate. We rounded out our downtown visit with a pitstop at the crepes joint and a personal favorite of mine, Park & Vine.  Finally, Joe & I headed up to Mason for one of the famous CSE pow wows. [love them]

Mother's Day weekend has been beautiful so far. Tomorrow's officially Mother's Day, but we're allowed to celebrate all weekend, right? ;)
